Mitcham Community Meal

Their Motto:

Community
serving
Community

Each Sunday  at 5:30 pm in Mitcham, this group provides a warm meal and company for those who need a decent feed and a  friendly chat .

Ben Frawley, CEO of Mitcham Community Meals spoke to us about this fantastic project .

Nearly 3 years ago Ben and his wife began providing hot meals for rough sleepers.

Beginning with only 6 guests, the program now caters to 50 - 60 individuals each week.
In addition to this, they provide a mid week meal served on the street for rough sleepers, hampers, blankets, outdoor sleeping mats and  haircuts. A mobile shower van will start as soon as Covid restrictions are eased. (Our Pres. Ben Stennett played an important role in securing a special parking permit for this facility to be provided.)

Ben's guests cannot be categorised, but range from homeless rough sleepers, the mentally ill, those in transit fleeing domestic violence, drug and alcohol addicts, and the lonely and / or elderly, seeking a kind word and a friendly smile.

Volunteers and donors play an important role in the preparation and serving of food, and his volunteers are just as diverse as his guests.
Among them you will find church groups, school groups, families, scouts and guides, sporting clubs, business groups and service clubs.

This may well be a project that we, at RC Nunawading may like to engage with.
