Our speakers were John Bradley and Sandra Green from Compassionate Friends of Victoria
They are a network of bereaved parents and siblings
Their mission is "Through our lived experience, support parents after the death of their child or a sibling after the death of their brother or sister"
Their vision is "to create a new normal"
They have around 22 support groups across Victoria including a mens group and a suicide support network
The Compassionate Friends offers a range of specialised knowledge, skills and experience through services which include:
· 24/7 Peer to Peer Support Grief Helpline 1800 641 091
· Information about parental bereavement and mental wellbeing, health services and referral
· Peer Support Groups in Metro and Regional Victoria
· Bereavement and Grief Seminars
· Friends and Family Bereavement Education Service
· Community Education
· Peer to Peer Social Support
· Bereaved through Suicide Outreach Peer to Peer Support
Through their networks they help people to work through the pain of grief, adapting to life without their child, accepting the reality of their loss, maintaining an enduring connection to the person who died
They would like us to spread the word about what they do and who they are - eg: have 10 friends like them on Facebook.
Their web address is www.compassionatefriendsvictoria.org.au
The visit has been arranged for 27 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.
The Institute has advised as follows:-
“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”
The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.
In April I will seek the members views on what areas they have an interest in being covered during the visit.
