Below is a copy of information from Strachan Eye care website

Volunteer Aid Optometry

OPTOMETRY GIVING SIGHT

Strachan EyecarePlus is pleased  to support  “Optometry Giving Sight” or OGS, an international organization established to WSD 2014

eliminate global blindness or visual impairment due to

uncorrected refractive error – simply the lack of an eye exam and a pair of glasses.

We donate two dollars from every pair of complete new glasses ordered to help finance projects in remote parts of Australia

and in countries like East Timor and India to supply glasses directly to people in need, as well as helping to finance programs

to train local people in underdeveloped countries in Ophthalmic care.

We also have a collection box for ‘old’ glasses at each practice. These pre-loved glasses are used in overseas aid programs, so bring in any old  glasses gathering dust in a drawer at home!

Sue is a past member of the National Committee of OGS.

EQUAL HEALTH

Sue has been a very active member of the Equal Health medical aid program, having been on camps to India nine times.P2050050P2120090

These programs provide eye care, including free glasses, to underprivileged people in remote areas of rural India

where access to routine health services is very limited. Sue has seen first hand on her trips the incredible difference

a pair of glasses can make to the lives of people who would otherwise be functionally “blind”.

Several of our staff have accompanied Sue on these trips including current Optical Technician Stephanie,

past receptionist and now Optometry student Michelle, Sue and Greg’s daughter Lacey and son Daniel.

They have all found it a to be an incredibly rewarding and humbling experience.

Equal Health is a secular non-government organization based in Perth. It was established in 1996 by Paul Clarke, an optical dispenser, initially just as a spectacle aid program, but the organization expanded rapidly and health aid is now provided in the optical, dental, general medical, ophthalmology and allied health disciplines.

During each annual camp Equal Health delivers around 6,000 pairs of new pre-made glasses at no cost to people in rural India.

The glasses used in the program are manufactured at Perth’s Casuarina prison by long-serving inmates who have been trained in optical dispensing by volunteers from within the optical profession.

New spectacle frames are donated each year from retail and wholesale optical companies around Australia.

Everyone seems to benefit from this partnership; Equal Health would otherwise never be able to afford to purchase the frames or pay the cost of having the lenses fitted, the prisoners feel good about contributing to a worthy cause, and the recipients of the glasses are over the moon with their new eyewear!

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPTOMETRY AID GROUPS

Sue has also been to East Timor with the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE – now know as the Brien Holden Vision Institute) and to Papua New Guinea with the YWAM Medical Ship, and she has just returned from a trip to Laos with Global Hand in late November/early December 2015.

Each of these camps has been immensely rewarding, with many of the people receiving their first ever pair of glasses – a life-changing experience for some.

District 9810 Rotary Foundation Seminar
Five Nunawading Rotarians along with approximately 80 other Rotarians from around the District, gathered last Friday night at Box Hill Town Hall for an update on OUR Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation marks its Centennial on 23 February 2017. All Rotarians are encouraged to Celebrate, Learn, Inform and Raise Funds.

The current Goals of the Rotary Foundation are:
  1. Finish the job of Ending Polio
  2. Strengthen Rotarians' Knowledge of the Foundation
  3. Improve the quality and impact of Grants in the Six Areas of Focus
  4. Enhance the image and awareness of the Foundation
We learnt about many of the very successful Projects funded by Foundation in our District and elsewhere.

Over the coming weeks and months, I will be focussing on the second goal by providing regular updates at Club meetings and in the Bulletin.

A new arrival

Rob & I are thrilled to have a new grandson, Harrison Hannes Ruedegger born on August 6 to our daughter, Megan and her husband, Marc. Regards Sue.

Congratulations to Sue, Rob and family

Feed the Little Children Project...

An invitation from David and Alison Tolstrup to attend a meeting at the RC of Box Hill on Tuesday 27 September 2016 to get an update on Alison's partner project for the last Rotary year

All your clubs were so generous in supporting Alison’s Partner Project in the last Rotary Year that I thought you may be interested to hear a bit more about the Feed The Little Children program in Broome, which was one aspect of Alison’s project.

Just to let you and anyone within your circle who may be interested to know that Padmini from FTLC is coming to speak at Box Hill on Tuesday September 27th.  Currently our weekly meeting cost is $35. Should you or anyone else wish to attend please let me know by Thursday Sept. 22nd so that I can book you in.

It should be an interesting night.

Cheers

From Sue and Russell

We are cruising off the Coast of Spain, weather is hot the scenery is lovely and the towns we have visited have been just gorgeous. This morning we saw dolphins along side our ship, so beautiful. On the first day out at sea we saw 4 whales, not bad from your dining room window!

A few more days in Spain then back to the cooler climate of England!

We are cruising with 98% Brits and it is so interesting to hear all the different accents from all over England. I have been called mum, ducks and lovie, and told " I'll see you in a bit" or " it ain't 'alf bad in it". It just makes me giggle. I am not sure what confused accent I will come back with but I enjoy all the different ones I am hearing.

Cheers

Sue

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins!

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates this successful D9810 project.   Ron will coordinate at District level but needs help from all clubs. In the last 18 months 120kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at $4,700.64

Eammon Bryant, UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed “We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match.    Our history working with, and converting foreign coin to help children in need matched with your unparalleled reach across Australian communities, we think, makes it a dream fit”.   UNICEF works in over 190 countries to support children’s health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

So, far more than 15 clubs in the district have joined enthusiastically into this initiative.   We are 12.1kgs into the next collection.
  =
• $2 will provide a severely malnourished child enough therapeutic super food for one day
•  $6 will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine

UNICEF will also take old European coins that are no longer in circulation.

Please leave your foreign coins and notes in the jar on the desk
