At our first meeting of the Rotary year I went through the plan for the incoming Board. A key part of the process is to “plan to plan”. This may sound trite but it is important that we carefully consider what we want to do long term and have time to discuss and agree of this direction as a club.
Several components have already come to the surface;
A large project within Whitehorse that has a significant impact on the local community. Preferably this project would involve other cluster clubs including Rotaract and may use Farmers Market funds. Proposals from all Club Members are requested.
Ongoing support of Interplast. The proposal is that we commit to $10,000 over three years.
Support for the Medical Imaging Machine project for $5,000 per year or $10,000 over 3 years. If we can gain ongoing District Matching Grants this funding would pay the shipping cost of one container to a hospital each year.
If we wish to support these larger projects then, of necessity smaller or ad-hoc commitments need to fall by the wayside.
We will decide on the components by the AGM in late November this year. This gives the President Nominee, who will be elected on that night, the chance to work with Janette (PE) and me to finalise a three-year plan by December 31st this year.
This will be your plan, so please throw ideas to your Committee Chair or to Janette or me.
At the Whitehorse Farmers' Market on Sunday 9th July, Past President David Hatcher presented former member John Vickers with Honorary Membership of the Rotary Club of Nunawading. John was recognised for his untiring in supporting the Market.
I am writing to thank the Club for its wonderful support of Interplast and its support during my role as District Chair over the last 3 years.
I thank Harvey for his support on the District Committee and hard work and he is continuing on the Committee this year. I know the Club will support him in his efforts and especially the Christmas in July function he is organising for Interplast later this month.
Our Club has proudly supported Interplast for a very long time with Ian Armstrong being District Chair of the Interplast Committee some 10 years ago (?) and he and Sue Warmington being observers on two separate Interplast surgical programs. Their experiences and advocacy inspired many.
I have the records of our District ‘Club’ donations over the last 9 years. Over this period, our Club was the second highest donating Club (second to Mordialloc), donating $36,447. In the last 3 years as District Chair I am proud to say that our Club donated $16,755, being the second highest donating Club ( with Mordialloc being the highest).
In short, the results of these donations have been truly translated into “ Repairing Bodies and Rebuilding Lives’, the Interplast objective since 1983. And These funds, with others have been recently used for the Laos, Samoa and Fiji programs already completed in the last 2 years and in the program to come.
I trust that our Club’s support for Interplast will continue for a long time and I am so pleased that the Club has adopted an objective to consistently support Interplast over the next 3 Years.
I attach the ‘Final’ updated Interplast Report over the last 3 years. An extraordinary result by any measure: Over $300,000 raised from Clubs and individuals in 3 years and nearly $160,000 last year, aided by a Global Grant and 3 very large personal and business donations. The detail is in the Report. Club Members can download the Report here.
OVER THE NEXT YEAR, I WILL COME TO YOU WITH A SHORT WEEKLY MESSAGE ABOUT THE ROTARY FOUNDATION, ITS PROGRAMS AND THE NEED FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
TODAY I HAVE A QUOTE FROM PAULO COSTA, PAST PRESIDENT OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL, 1990-1991.
“Rotary International’s masterpiece is The Rotary Foundation. It transforms our dreams into splendid realities . . . it is the most generous expression of Rotarian generosity - a generosity that not only brings benefits but also brings help and cooperation to solve the problems that affect mankind. The Rotary Foundation achieves the best that mankind can possibly achieve.”
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS WORK.
- Hello! Pizza Hut? - No sir, it is Google Pizza. - Sorry, I must have the wrong number? - No sir, you are correct, Google bought Pizza Hut. - OK. Take my order please. - Well sir, do you want the usual? - The usual? How do you know me? - According to your caller ID, the last 12 times, you ordered pizza it was with cheese, sausage and thick crust. - OK! OK! That's what I want. - Sir, may I suggest to you this time the ricotta cheese, arugula with sun-dried tomatoes? - No, I hate vegetables! - But your cholesterol is high! - How do you know that? - Through the Laboratory Subscriber's Guide. We have the results of your blood tests for the last 7 years. - Okay, but I want my regular pizza, I already take the high cholesterol medicine. - But sir, you have not taken your medicine regularly. Four months ago, you only purchased a box of 30 tablets at Chemist Warehouse. - I bought more from another pharmacy. - It is not showing on your Visa credit card. - I paid in cash. - But you did not withdraw that much cash according to your ANZ Bank statement. - I have other sources of cash. - This is not showing on your last ATO income tax return, unless you got it from an undeclared source. - THAT'S ENOUGH! I'm sick of Google, Facebook and Twitter. I'm going to an Island without Wi-Fi or internet, where there are no mobile phones or satellites to spy on me!
- I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport, It expired 5 weeks ago.
