DISTRICT GRANTS - HELPING AT HOME

Have we as a Club spoken to the District Governor or our District Rotary Foundation Chair about what we want to do as a Club?
What do we want to do? Is there a project we would all find worthy? If so, let’s take action and get Foundation funds to come together as a Club and change the world….one project at a time

Regally Vice – the sequel

On the 7th February this year I wrote about the upcoming reception at Government House for Rotary International President, Ian Riseley. That event occurred on the 13th March and I feel rather underwhelmed by the outcome. I could not imagine how the event would be staged with 800+ Rotarians in attendance from all over Victoria. Obviously there would be no opportunity to meet the Governor or Ian due to the large number of attendees. But I was rather surprised that there was no chance to even see the key players.

The event commenced with us mixing in the ballroom while munching canapes and drinking non-alcoholic beverages. I chatted to Rotarians from Warrnambool and Essendon North before meeting up with Judith, Janette and Ian Armstrong. Ian had a natural advantage in that he could see the Governor and Ian Riseley over the sea of faces assembled for the speeches. Being vertically challenged, I had to view events on the TV screen that was streaming the proceedings. After a brief and well researched speech by the Governor, Ian responded and they were gone! In the three hours of the event the main party was there for no more than ten minutes. We were then left to wander the ground floor and view the paintings and other interesting attributes. After a few more nibbles and drinks, we all went on our way.

It was an honour to be there and see Rotary recognised by the Governor, who is the patron of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, the oldest Rotary Club in Australia. I felt rather sorry for the Rotarians that travelled for up to eight hours without even seeing the participants.

Guest Speaker - Cruising
Tim Lawton is the owner and operator of Worldwide Travel and Cruise, a Blackburn Travel Agent. Tim spoke to us about "Cruising in the Modern Era".

Tim grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand and got into the Travel industry almost by accident. He has been in the industry for nearly 40 years and his wife is also a Travel Agent.

Cruising (ocean, river, canals, expeditionary etc.) is the fastest growing segment of the Travel Industry and you can spend anywhere between $ 500 and $ 50,000 on a cruise. Tim sees that his job is to find the best travel experience that meets your budget and expectations.

Leisure cruising started in the 1800s and was popular in the 1930s with the rich and famous. In the 1960s it was seen as an alternative to flying, particularly on popular routes such as London to New York. In the 1970s, the TV show "The Love Boat" sparked a resurgence and the growth has been unabated ever since.

Tips and Suggestions
  • Select cabins with passengers sleeping both above and below, thus avoiding noise from public areas.
  • You can save money by getting a Guaranteed Cabin but you won't know where you are located until you board.
  • Book "signature" restaurants early to avoid disappointment.
  • Choose the cruise-organised day trips. That way, you won't be left behind onshore.
  • Make hygiene a priority. Disease can spread quickly on a ship.
  • Get exercise by using the stairs and not waiting for the elevators. They are less crowded too.
  • Unless you are a REALLY heavy drinker, Drinks Packages are not worthwhile. You may want to consider a coffee card, however.
  • Put your phone in "Flight Mode". Roaming and Wi-Fi are very expensive and unreliable.
  • If you have flexibility, look for special deals in the weekend newspapers.

Volunteer Forum - 18 April
Please email the names of your nominated guests to Neil Ibbott so that Neil can send personalised invitation letters to them. The organisers have requested that Rotarian only attend the Forum if they are accompanying guests. Because we have cancelled our meeting at Bucatini, we will be arranging a social evening for those not attending the Forum.

As an sample of our Rotary projects, Rotarians are asked to bring non-perishable food items.
