President's Message
Hello to all Club members and Bulletin subscribers.
The year genuinely feels like it's flying by. By the time the next Bulletin is out it'll be March and just about time to prepare for the joint District Conference in Hobart.
It was great to hear from our District Governor, Peter Behm. Some of the points he raised in his presentation may have sounded familiar: focus on the club experience, raise your profile in the local community, get involved in projects that are relevant and put out calls for volunteers to help with them. Just because you've heard them previously doesn't make them less true or less important.
I hope that there are at least a couple of projects you can talk about with enthusiasm and passion and that you use those to describe Rotary. The cycle by which funds donated to Rotary International get invested and they way some of that money is fed back into the grants available to clubs is important, but if you don't want your audience's eyes to start glazing over it's probably better to talk about the playground project or the work done by Bob Williams with Ryda or the Youth Achievement Awards -- people can get their head around it and might even be willing to lend a hand.
It's going to be a busy few weeks. We've got the CNY dinner at Nanyang Flavour Kitchen in Doncaster East this week. You're free to attend the Blackburn Hotel for dinner if you'd like, but don't expect fines or microphones. We've got Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, the Farmers Market, three Umbrella Dementia Cafe sessions before the end of March, the Conference and a whole gamut of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary working bee dates.
Speaking of the Umbrella Dementia Cafe, don't forget you can sign up for this Wednesday's catering volunteers list -- one slot left -- or ANY session date between now and the end of 2026. How's that for organised? Umbrella Cafe Catering Volunteer Signup
If you're having trouble with ClubRunner, we have a few tech-savvy people who can help, with John Lynch likely being your first point of contact or, alternatively, Graeme Moorfoot (when he is in the country!)
The AFL Football season starts on Thursday 5th March with Round 0! There also further changes in the fixture with “Floating Finals (TM)” leading to more revenue for the AFL and more gambling ads on TV.

Matt Gregg MP is our local member for the federal seat of Deakin. This event will bring together local seniors to connect, share conversations and celebrate the important contributions made by community groups across our electorate. The morning will include light refreshments, guest speakers and an opportunity for attendees to engage with local services and one another in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
If other members are also interested in attending, please contact Ian by Wednesday 4th March.
A representative of the Club will present to the group on our activities and projects.
Recently the four Victorian Emergency Relief Networks (VicERNs) met to discuss a joint response to the January Bushfires and agreed to establish the VicERN Bushfire Relief Program. I believe we are strategically better placed to respond jointly than any time previously and our geographic locations provide logistical support potential to each community and District impacted. In discussions to date, it is clear there is no one fix for all and Districts and Communities are all underway at various levels and directions. VIcERN's Bushfire Relief Program can and will assist from the sidelines when and where it is desired by the communities.
The 4 Networks agreed to a Joint response for the purposes below:
Establish a Joint Victorian Emergency Relief Networks Bushfire Response Program and Committee for the purposes of:
Liaison with each Emergency Relief Network to encourage Bushfire Relief Donations.
Coordinate Corporate, Agency and Government approaches and activities with VicERNs;
Liaison with Districts, Clubs, Local Community Organisations, Support Agencies, Local and State Government to access required donated goods and/or funds without cost;
Establish and manage a central Donations Centre for ERNs, partner Corporates and interested public to contribute and deliver to;
Manage the donation offers and receipt of goods and or Funds donated in accord with the needs of the affected Communities.
Determine what range and quantities of goods will be required initially and longer-term in liaison with Clubs and affected Families balanced with available space and financial resources;
Assist Lead Clubs to identify/assess local needs and support families; &
Manage the distribution of donated goods to Lead Clubs or Community Hubs.
The Joint Emergency Relief Networks' Bushfire Relief Program and Team is established to support the Program's purposes. Partner Groups (Fire impacted Rotary Districts, Clubs, Community Groups and organisations), Government agencies or Partner Support Agencies supporting the Bushfire Recovery efforts are invited to apply for free 'Partner' membership.
