LAST WEEK'S MEETING

Guests last week included AG Geoff Logie- Smith ( RC of Mt. Waverley), our speaker Eric McGee ,our two inductees Dev Puri and Milan Zivanovic and Milan's wife Savka, who we had the pleasure of meeting at the dinner last week held to celebrate the conclusion of our cluster's Baton Relay. Harvey's wife Marg Hodge also attended
Pres. Colin was unwell, and so Geoff performed the formalities entailed in the induction of new members. Russell and Ian will serve as their mentors.
Both Milan and Dev spoke briefly of their eagerness to play an active part in serving our community
The Club was delighted to be able to welcome our new members.

OUR SPEAKER LAST WEEK
Eric McGee
Making Violins

Bruce Simcox introduced Eric a long time friend, - a builder by profession, past member of RC Balwyn and present member of Probus Balwyn.
Eric had spent a lifetime working with timber , had played the violin since childhood and loved music - so it was not unremarkable that he should turn his hand to making violins .
Eric explained how he built violins from the selection of timber, the interpretation of designs, and the minutiae of hand crafting using beautiful (and very expensive) tools.
He showed us how tuning was carried out, and concluded his presentation with a few familiar old pieces which had us al tapping our toes and singing along.

REPORTS
BATON RELAY

Graeme Moorfoot reported on the baton relay to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia.
He thanked Janette Etherington, Gabby Knaepple and  Harvey Lane for all the work they had put in to make it such a success.
A supplement to this bulletin incorporating more detail and lots of photographs will appear in your mailboxes quite soon.
Despite the inclement weather, this was by far the most fun we have had since the advent of Covid- 19 .
Pride of Workmanship Awards

John Lynch recently approached the Whitehorse Business Group (WBG)  with a proposal relating to the Incorporation of our Rotary Pride of Workmanship program into 2021 Whitehorse Business Group (WBG) Excellence in Business Awards.
It appears that the negotiations have gone well. John will have further discussions with the group to finalise arrangements.

For background info on Pride of workmanship, I include an extract from John's initial communication with WBG below:

The Rotary Club of Nunawading conducted annual Pride of Workmanship Awards for 5 years from 2011 – 2015.

We held the function annually with about 80 attendees including nominees, employers, co-workers, families and Rotarians.
Over this period, we had approximately 60 nominees in total with cash prizes for the top 3 nominees each year.

'Humanity in Action'

Posted by Sam McCurdy

The book â€˜HUMANITY IN ACTION: Celebrating 100 years of Rotary clubs in Australia and island neighbours’ - is now available.

This is not any old history book.  This is a fascinating collection of historical origins, reaching out, adventures in service, identifying need, achievement and fun!

Posterity demands a brief overview of Rotary’s beginnings in Australia and such coverage is included in some detail covering the formation of the Rotary Clubs of Melbourne and Sydney.

The book has over 500 pages covering Rotary achievements through the various eras, dozens of pages of club, district and personal data - along with an amazing gallery of dated and modern images.

'Humanity in Action' costs $25 (plus postage of $10, which will vary for multiple book orders).
