Mike P mentioned the recent Dads Group Inc. BBQ at Antonio Park. The group has been meeting for the past 12 to 18 months. There were around 20 to 25 Dads, their partners and children. RC of Nunawading supplied sausages, eggs and bacon.
Janette advised the 2 recent sausage sizzles at Bunnings raised a nett profit of $2,060 - we sold 930 sausages. Many thanks to Joe and Mary V who did all the shopping, set up, sliced 30 kg of onions, picked up stuff after closing etc. Janette also advised we had done 12 sizzles since October 2016 and raised over $13,000 which is a great result.
Our speaker was Marjorie Morgan OAM - she is a volunteer with the Red Cross and was also on the auxilliary for Aurora so she was happy to hear of the partnership we have with Aurora.
Marjorie spoke to us about Celeste de Chabrillan
Celeste was a courtesan who was born in Paris in 1824. She later became an actress and author.
She fell in love with Lionel de Chabrillan who was a Count and they eventually married in 1854. A few days later they left for Australia and Lionel became the French Counsel-General in Melbourne. They had no children. Lionel liked to gamble and lost a lot of money
Celeste wrote her memoirs in 4 volumes and these preceded her arrival in Australia. Consequently she had difficulty making friends and being accepted by society.
Celeste returned to France to get her jewellery from Lionel's brother - she used them to pay off debt.
She funded a home for orphaned children and also a chapel but her name was not able to be attached to either due to her past.
She died in 1909. She wrote 12 novels and 26 plays.
Under her stage name Celeste Mogador she wrote "Daughter of Paris" and under her married name she wrote "The French Consuls Wife"
