Hi everyone
I hope you and your families are keeping well.
As we know, this is a very challenging time. It is important that we keep engaging with, and supporting each other by whatever mechanism we are comfortable with. For some that will be through social media and Zoom meetings, while for others it will be through phone calls.
I have spoken with a number of members already. I intend to touch base with every member individually by the end of next week – so by 3 April.
Di C and Sue W have set up a Nunawading Rotary Meetings Facebook group. This is a closed group and therefore only open to members and their partners to join. If you are on Facebook and would like to join please let Sue or Di know.
The District Assembly scheduled for Sunday 24 May 2020 has been cancelled. Alternative arrangements are being considered.
Update on Rotary Recycled Overseas Playgrounds (RORP)
A decision was made to not continue with removing playgrounds until further notice. However, there will be plenty to remove once we are up and running again.
9 playgrounds are in a shipping container on their way to Sri Lanka however. 2 of them are from the City of Whitehorse. Given the current situation, they may not make it to their final destinations until internal transport restrictions are lifted in Sri Lanka.
Medical Imaging Machine update
We have a medical imaging machine packed into a container that is being stored at a former members warehouse in Nunawading. Again, once restrictions are lifted, this machine will make its way to Fiji for installation.
Zoom Meetings
This is an online meeting application. We trialled it on Wednesday evening with varying degrees of success. We had up to 14 members logged into it at one point.
As with all things that are new, we learn and modify as we go along. It will not suit everyone. Some members don’t have the right software or equipment to support using Zoom.
The Bulletin will be used as a forum to report back what occurred in the online meeting so no one misses out, and everyone is kept up to date.
I have been invited to experience Box Hill Central Rotary’s Zoom meeting on Wednesday morning. They will have a speaker, so I look forward to seeing how this works.
I received a list of protocols from Box Hill Central regarding running zoom meetings
Protocols
- Be aware that everyone who has joined the meeting can see you
- Be aware of what is going on in your background
- Try not to sit with natural light behind you – it causes you to look like you are in a shadow
- Alert other family members so that they can either join you or remain out of view
- Try to separate yourself from background noise
- Please do not talk when others are speaking – use the mute button and only unmute if you are recognised by the Chair
- If you would like to speak there is a “hands up” mechanism under the Participants button on the bottom of your screen. Hover your mouse over the bottom of the screen for it to appear or place your finger at the bottom of the screen if you are on a tablet or phone – a sidebar appears and under the list of names is a “raise your hand” message
- Above all if it doesn’t work, don’t stress we can get it sorted after the meeting!
Food handling course
Sue W recently obtained the names of members who were interested in undertaking an online food handling course.
She has found a provider and will test their basic course to see how long it takes, ease of use etc. and report back.
