As a Rotarian of tender years (4 1/2 years as a member of the best Rotary club, as opposed to my age.....) I am amazed at how much I am still learning about this extensive and complex organisation. Take Australian Rotary Health for example. Did you know that ARH was founded in 1981, and that the first health area which was focussed on was Cot Death? Ground breaking research into stopping babies dying was funded by our ARH.
Since 1981 over $40m has been allocated to research projects, with the current focus on mental health. Best of all, 100% of donations is given to research - a rare occurrence in the fundraising world. At the moment ARH is funding 66 researchers and research projects - I wonder what, in 20 or 30 years time, we will look back on as the successful outcomes we helped to fund and support with our club’s donations?
At this weeks meeting there was lots of colourful scarves, lots of friendly rivalry and a lot of footy stories. A few of our members shared some experiences of football as youngsters or of Grand Finales they have been to. Russell gave us some insight into what is involved with sponsoring a player in the Melbourne football club. It is always interesting to hear about past experiences of our members.
