Beverley Hoskins celebrated a major birthday milestone recently. One of the guests at her party was Louise Popowitz, a former Exchange Student from Denmark that Nunawading hosted. Louise now lives in Sydney. Here are some thoughts that she shared with everyone that evening.
Dear Bev, First and foremost, happy birthday! When we spoke on the phone a few weeks back, you subtly said to me that I'd be representing all the exchange students you've hosted throughout the years. That would be 13!, so quite a responsibility to take on. I can only imagine how much it takes to open your home to a young person from across the world, who comes with a different cultural background and most likely does not speak your language, at least not to begin with. But Bev, without having spoken with the other 12 students you've hosted throughout the years, I have no doubt that I am speaking for all of us; that year changed our lives more than we could have possibly imagined! The fact that I am standing here today, not only as a Danish citizen, but also Australian, I think says more than words about the impact the year had on me. Not only did I find an extended family in you and Bob, and my other host-families, I found a home and 16 years later, my Australian life partner. I cannot imagine what my life would look like if it hadn't been for that year back in 1999 / 2000. Bev, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you've done and been for me these last 26 years. I, and I'm sure the 12 other students, will forever be grateful that Bob and you opened up your home and lives to us. Thank you. Lots of love. Louise. 💗
