President Phil's Message

Taking time to honour 50 years of contribution to the Club

There are many tasks that a President has to do that take time and are not particularly enjoyable. However, there are three tasks that are 100% pleasure.
  1. The Changeover Night is a night of excitement at the beginning of the year and a night of reflection (and relief) at the end. I have had the former and look forward to the latter.
  2. Inducting new members is a privilege that confirms that something is going well in the Club.
  3. The final task is the recognition of member’s contributions to the Club. This task can be fulfilled by awarding Paul Harris Fellowships at the Changeover Night or in this case by honouring 50 years of contribution to the Club.
On the 11th April, the Club honoured the 50 years of contribution to Rotary by Dick Tregear. Dick did not want a fuss made of this milestone but the 54 attendees felt otherwise. Pam and their four children Janelle, Julie, Joanne and Greg with their partners joined PP 1989-90 Peter Tierney, partners and friends for this milestone.

Dick joined Rotary Club of Nunawading on the 10th April 1968, held many Board positions and was President in 1980-81. He also held District positions over many years. He has always been an active member and has made things happen in any portfolio allocated to him.

Words from Colin Taylor, Bob Hoskins and Russell Warmington helped to fill in the gaps after Dick gave us his story.
Dick has served Rotary and the Nunawading community for more than 50 years.  It was an honour to present Dick with a PHF with double sapphires as recognition of his contribution to Rotary.

Last Week's Meeting - 50 Years of Rotary Service

Dear Rotarians,

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Rotary Club for the most enjoyable evening on Wednesday. As you would be able to tell, Richard was extremely humble with the occasion and a little overcome with it all. We were delighted to have our family with us for the evening.

A big thank you to Bob, Colin and Russell for their kind words.

Lastly, but certainly not least I would like to say a huge thank you for my beautiful flowers. The fact that are the red and blue of my beloved Demons added to the pleasure

Sincerely
Pam Tregear
Whitehorse Men's Shed Official Opening

Today five Club members attended a morning tea to celebrate the new additions to the Whitehorse Men's Shed.

$ 20,000 was donated by the Department of Infrastructure & Regional Development, organised by local MP and Rotarian Michael Sukkar, to fund a new equipment Shed, veranda on the existing Shed, and new equipment.

Our Club last year donated $ 2,000 to fund the slab under the new equipment Shed.

The Club was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM)

Major players in the global struggle to eradicate malaria have recognised that we have reached a cross-road. Despite the impressive 60% reduction in the annual death toll from malaria since 2000 and the steady stream of countries achieving local malaria elimination. Progress seems to have stalled.

Many recognise that now is the time for sustained resurgent activity to achieve malaria elimination for all time.

Bill Gates is lobbying for a 2025 date for elimination in SE Asia and the Pacific as well as urging the Australian Government to take leadership to accelerate the programs. The 1st Malaria World Congress will be held in Melbourne (July 1-5 2018) and I have been appointed to the International Advisory Board for the Conference Committee.

The Congress is shaping up to be a very important and timely meeting at which RAM will be represented, highlighting the success of our ongoing programs in PNG and Solomon  Islands and our commitment to assist Timor-Leste to quickly achieve malaria free certification through support from a $USD 240,000 Global Grant.

Also, of note is the successful fundraising for the Malaria Vaccine Project which is expected to meet the $AUD 500,000 target.
