Leading Senior Constable Caron Kingsley from the Police Forensic Service gave a most interesting talk on her work at the Forensic Centre at Macleod. The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department (FSD) is one of the largest providers of forensic science services in Australia with around 500 people made up of scientists, sworn officers (police) and admin staff. She reminded us that CSI and other TV shows are works of fiction, while a lot of the techniques are based on fact, the way they work certainly isn't and real policing takes much longer than a hour. They work on incidents such as accidents, drugs, bush fires, murders and malicious letters looking at ballistics, finger prints, DNA enhancing CCTV, written material to aid in victim and perpetrator identification, all the time taking care to protect the evidence from contamination. She described a truly dedicated team of experts helping Victorians, Australians and even international agencies in fighting crime and bringing closure to victim's families. |
