Vocational Visit to Eastern Emergency Relief
We had a very interesting visit to EER in Mitcham and thank Ben S and Ian A for organising it.
Eastern Emergency Relief Network Inc (EERN) was established in October 1995. There was a need in the City of Whitehorse for a central repository of second-hand furniture and other household goods to be accessed for people in times of crisis.
The people assisted are those who have been identified by member agencies to have an urgent need. These include people with long term illness, unemployment, loss of home and belongings through fire, domestic violence, lack of family support or homelessness and refugees.
For the financial year ending 30th June 2015 there were more than 2250 “distributions” to individuals and / or families. Distributions vary from a small quantity of children’s clothing or a box of food, to a full house of furniture and other household essentials.
Some of the items provided during the past year include beds/mattresses (800), lounge suites/couches (500), and wardrobes (75). A total of 1850 electrical items were also accessed (after being tested and tagged). Items included TV’s (85), washing machines/dryers (200), refrigerators/freezers (120), microwave ovens (120). In addition, some 350 emergency food parcels were given out plus 250 special Christmas hampers.
It is conservatively estimated that the monetary value of assistance provided would in the order of $1 million.
EERN has a volunteer base of over 70 people.
The number of member welfare agencies has increased to more than 140 members. 117 (84%) of members utilized EERN services on at least one occasion during the year. Eight agencies accounted for 45% of total distributions during the year.
Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central - please see below for excerpts from their Bulletin"
.......it was my delight at last Wednesday’s meeting to announce that our Rotary Club had won the prestigious Whitehorse Business Excellence ‘Community Award’ at the Annual Whitehorse Business Gala Dinner, held last Friday evening (16/10). It is both special and humbling to have our business peers and community leaders recognize the work achieved by this Club. Our Mission as a Club is about ‘Making a Difference through Service above Self’.
The areas recognized include the contribution the Club makes to the local community through its support of programs like the Whitehorse Men’s Shed, Medical Student Travel Bursary, NewHope Community Care, Whitehorse Farmers Market, Handbrake Turn and more and through the Whitehorse Charity Golf Day, support for NADRASCA, Alkira, Taralye and Deakin University ‘Change 100 Lives’ Scholarship. Besides support for the local community we see exciting developments happening with our Indigenous Owairtilla Project in the Northern Territory.
