Colin was born in Mortlake and grew up on a farm some 50 km east of Hamilton. His parents Ellen and Eric Read had a soldier settlement farming lot of 650 acres on which they farmed sheep and cattle, eventually selling the property when they retired in 1982.
Having schooled at Glen Thomson Primary, then Lake Bolac HS and eventually matriculating from Hamilton College, Colin left the farm in 1973 at the age of 18.
He spent the first 8 years of his adult working life in the hospitality sector in Melbourne suburbia, working his way up from apprentice chef to manager.
He then changed course, finding himself a position as a sales rep in the felt industry. Having spent 7 years at night school studying I.T and business management, he worked his way up to the position of General manager.
During this period, he married his wife Jenny, bought a house and fathered and raised four children -Daniel, Andrew, Lyndon and Sarah.
In 1992 he set up his own Company - Australian Felt Specialists Pty Ltd, distributing industrial felt and felt products all over Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. He owned and managed this company for the next 24 years after which he retired, selling both business and the property from which it had operated for nearly two and a half decades.
It was during this period of his life that Col joined Rotary, became a Grand lodge Officer in Victorian Freemasonry, took up SCUBA diving, got a gig as speaker at The Canberra Press Club and started playing Rugby Union.
To quote Colin:
“Since then, I have played with retirement but am still not quite satisfied with that choice, so who knows what my next adventure will be!
But right now, I am happy to be a member of the Rotary Club of Nunawading and your President for the next 12 months”
