Last Meeting wrap up

Around 30 members and partners enjoyed a really informative visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research on Wednesday with dinner afterwards at Naughtons Hotel Parkville.  Many thanks to Roger for organising the event.
  • It is the largest medical research institute in Australia and has strong links with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne
  • Gordon Clunes Mathieson was due to be the 1st Director of WEHI but was killed in World War One.
  • Past discoveries include how our immune system avoids attacking our bodies tissue, dysfunction of the thymus,  developed current procedure for growing flu virus, controlling infection after chemotherapy
  • The institute focuses on research into immune disorders, cancer and infectious diseases
  • There are 1000 researchers and support staff
  • 46% of funding comes from Federal Government, 6% from State Government, 13% from investment and other income, 8% from philanthropic sources. The balance comes from fund raising.
Notable scientists include Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnett, Sir Gustav Nossal, Professor Don Metcalf, Professor Jacques Miller and Professor Ian Mackay

BRADLEY BOLA VISIT AND MEDICAL PROGRAM.

ASSISTED BY:  ROTARY CLUB OF NUNAWADING

Latest Update on Bradley

Since his operation to straighten his eyes, Bradley has been in recovery and care of Teresa & Michael Cox who are his host family again. The eyes have been sore and bloodshot ,but the drops and occasional pain killers have seen improvement. We had a follow up check by Dr Lionel Kowal on Monday 25th and concern about the double vision will hopefully resolve over the next few weeks before Bradley returns to PNG.

The week at RYLA  quoted by Bradley as "The best week of my life" was shared with the Rotarian's at Wandin who have supported him over several years. He has several other invitations to tell his RYLA & ROMAC story to other clubs before his return.

The follow-up meetings from RYLA involve a "Toolbox Meeting" and a Reunion in August. Final medical checks will be completed by the 17th August and planning for his return home are underway.

Sincere thanks to the Cox Family for their ongoing support in hosting Bradley, the ROMAC volunteers who have visited and supported him wjth visits to his beloved "Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club", and travel to and from appointments and hospital and the fundraising by Rotarian's to continue this "Life Saving and Changing" work.

Finally again the wonderful work of the surgeons Andrew Heggie and Lionel Kowal and their teams who have made such incredible changes to this young mans life over many years.

What do Minions, the film Despicable Me 2, Pharrell Williams and Rotary D9810 have in common?

Well the Minions were up to their shenanigans dancing to Pharrell William's "Happy" (a #1 single and theme from Despicable Me 2") and "greeted" 110 Rotarians as they arrived at last Friday's Membership Seminar!

The "modern Rotary" scene was set for this year's event, and representatives from 80% of the Club's in our District were there to hear "the how" to go about attracting more people to make Rotary the "volunteer organisation of choice" and join us make even more of a difference in our community and around the world.

Our speed dialogue session was outstanding. Everyone engaged to the extent that we have so much feedback that it will take a week or so to collate! Watch this space.

From all accounts, there was something for everyone, and a number of Club's have expressed their appreciation with clear "can do" messages.

Here's a summary of some of the key lessons they took from the evening:
  1. Meetings need to be interesting, informative and not too bogged down in bureaucracy.
  2. Whilst it is important to "balance the books", the essential truth is that without attracting new members over time we won't need to worry about fees, as there won't be any members to pay them.
  3. A planned mentoring program to welcome new members, and retain them, is essential.
  4. Create a clear sense of belonging with shirts, caps and other marketing tools add to the team feeling.
  5. Whilst we need younger members, there are lots of 'not-so' young people who are enthusiastic, experienced and have time ... just waiting to see what we do ..... and to be asked!
  6. We have to embrace public relations and social media in all its forms to advertise to our local community, including younger people.
  7. That our Club needs to reflect the make-up of their community.
  8. We need to be more visible in our community with relevant projects. People will want to join when they actually see what we do!
  9. The undeniable truth from the Rotary Club of Frankston is that they lifted membership from 39 members to a possible 65 members which means that their strategy works.
  10. That everybody in the Club is responsible for the Club vibe and membership drive.
There was also a great question of the "Frankston guys" regarding how they funded one particular membership strategy. They have since confirmed that they apply the proceeds of "fun fines, and table raffles and other creative ideas" that their existing members know will be invested into the Club's future.

Our Drop Box folder is full of goodies ready for club use. If you can't see it, let us know.

We wish everyone well as you work together on our #1 project for the year - Membership!

Please send your success stories to Russell so that we can share what is working with everyone ....

District Governor

PS - If anyone lost a scarf or a Rotary badge on Friday, contact Russell too

bits and pieces
  • Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith who will pass them onto RC of Monash.
  • Save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight! - proceeds go to ROMAC

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins!

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates this successful D9810 project.   Ron will coordinate at District level but needs help from all clubs. In the last 18 months 120kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at $4,700.64

Eammon Bryant, UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed “We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match.    Our history working with, and converting foreign coin to help children in need matched with your unparalleled reach across Australian communities, we think, makes it a dream fit”.   UNICEF works in over 190 countries to support children’s health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

So, far more than 15 clubs in the district have joined enthusiastically into this initiative.   We are 12.1kgs into the next collection.
  =
• $2 will provide a severely malnourished child enough therapeutic super food for one day
•  $6 will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine

UNICEF will also take old European coins that are no longer in circulation.

Please leave your foreign coins and notes in the jar on the desk
