WHAT IS A ROTARY FOUNDATION GLOBAL GRANT SCHOLARSHIP?

Established in 1947, the original Ambassadorial Scholarship program, valued in excess of $20,000 was designed to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries.
With the launch of the Rotary Grants model, scholarships are now used to fund study by graduate students whose career goals support an area of focus. The funding is the same as a Humanitarian global grant with a minimum scholarship amount of US$30,000. Upon returning home, Rotary Scholars share with Rotarians and others their experiences that led to a greater understanding of
their host country, and what career they will go into in order to meet the six areas of focus and spread good will and understanding.

WHY DON’T YOU NOMINATE A GRADUATE STUDENT FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

President Phil's Message

The three year plan - III年

On the 11th October, I discussed the three year plan with the Club. Out of that discussion came many good ideas but no clear direction as to what the Cub wanted to do in the years ahead. It confirmed to me that we had no CLEAR direction. I come back to the theoretical question that friends / work colleagues / prospective members might ask;
“What does the Rotary Club of Nunawading do?”

Today we can answer this question with a lot of examples such as support for Eastern Emergency Relief, Aurora School, Medical Imaging and Interplast. These answers are all correct but they do not convey the key role of our Cub within our community. We need a short statement that encompasses our role and leaves the questioner with a simple and long lasting feeling that WE know what we are doing.

The closest submission that gave this direction was from Kevin Thomas with; “We support youth in Whitehorse”
Ideas for specific events or projects tend to support this direction. For instance Aurora, Deb Ball, fun run, Interact Club at Blackburn High.
I like the idea of a general goal as many projects can be linked to this goal, completed then new goals added still with the same direction. It is easy for future Presidents to stamp their mark without changing the overall goal.
If we wish to go ahead with this goal then we need to tighten up the definition. Are we supporting;
  • Disadvantaged youth
  • Youth education
  • Families
  • Disabled youth
Should we rule in or out youth with a high socioeconomic advantage and only work with youth in the lower socioeconomic groups? I will discuss these questions with Janette and Gabby and the Board tonight. This is your decision and I would welcome your input so that we can move ahead as a Club.

Guest Speaker - Ventura Bus Lines
Andrew Cornwall is the CEO of Ventura Bus Lines and grandson of the founder. Ventura Bus Lines has become an iconic name in Victoria. From one man driving a bus between Box Hill and the city, it is now the largest privately-owned bus company in Australia, with over 1,600 employees and 950 buses carrying more than 32 million customers across Melbourne every year.

George Cornwall started his first bus route on 24 December 1924. He named the company after the city of Ventura in USA where he spent some time. The company's colours reflect the light blue of the sky, the deep blue of the ocean and the yellow of the Californian sun.

The company has grown rapidly over the past 93 years primarily through the acquisition of National Bus Company, US Bus Lines, Ivanhoe Bus Company and, most recently Grenda's.

Ventura's Mission is to provide dependable, friendly and sustainable bus services. Andrew is also proud of the company's history of innovation from using charcoal to fuel busses when diesel was scarce in the post-War years to the introduction of GPS technology and the evaluation of electric vehicles. He sees that in the future that, even with autonomous vehicles there still will be a need for a "bus host" to relate to passengers.

Whitehorse Art Show
We are invited to the Gala Cocktail Party Launch of the Whitehorse Art Show (formerly known as The Box Hill Art Show). This event replaces the dinner they had for many years and is an innovation of the new Director Geoff Iles .

They would really appreciate us supporting this event – and the Art Show, of course. The cost of attending the cocktail party is only $30 and as well as entertainment on the night and the grand opening by Frederick Cubbins’s granddaughter Penny McColm, there is the Awards ceremony. Quality finger food and drinks will be served.

Bookings can be made online at www.whitehorseartshow.com.au and follow the links.
