Hi everyone

Hope you are enjoying the fab weather.  Restrictions are being lifted slowly which is fantastic to see.

Aside from our Nunawading members, we welcomed Ian Evans (RC of Melbourne), Kiel Egging (President of NewGen) and Ann Lynch (RC of Eltham)

Two thank you notes – polio and Lift the Lid on Mental Illness donations
Sold another 4 books of raffle tickets – Russell is doing a poster for members to send out to contacts
Fine tuning the virtual fund raiser
Bucatini coffee initiative – change to include soft drink etc.….
Len has a box of around 180 spectacles/glasses donated via Fareshare
Please do the online food handling course if you haven’t already done so
Register for District Assembly
Vote for the constitution is almost finalized and will be sent to Consumer Affairs Victoria.  We then have to look at the club bylaws.
Janette in her role as Rotary rep for Interplast zooms all over the place for meetings including Interstate

Guest speaker was Ryan Purdie who runs a project called “Traffic Lights for Kinders”
Ryan repurposes discarded traffic lights and gives them to kindergartens across the Country so young children can learn about road safety.  The traffic lights come from VicRoads.
Since he started in May 2017,  he has saved around 2.8 tonnes going to landfill
It takes him around 2 to 4 hours to prepare each light and approximately $100.  He currently sources the electronics from USA.
So far, 170 schools Australia wide have benefitted from this initiative.
Ryan is looking at more interactive items to engage those with disabilities – i.e.: an interactive pedestrian man

A couple of great ideas came from members – Len advised Ryan about the magistrates court fund.  Wayne can give assistance for the electronics and potentially save Ryan a lot of money.

Outcomes from the Whitehorse Centenary Project Group

This group met on Thursday 14 May.  Also had guests Olive Aumann representing Carrington Health, Ben Stennett representing the City of Whitehorse and Ray McLeod – Dryden representing Vic Police – they are all Rotarians
Decision made that the project will involve Mental Health – an issue highlighted as highly important and relevant in the current climate.

New Courses available in My Rotary

Dear Rotary and Rotaract members,

As part of our alliance with Toastmasters, we’re offering new communication courses to help you grow your networks, improve your skills, and increase your impact in the community. Visit Rotary’s Learning Center on a personal computer or iPad tablet to take the first two courses (Note: courses can't be accessed on mobile devices):

Develop a speech — Learn how to write compelling speeches that take into account your topic, audience, and goal.
Deliver a speech — Explore the effect your voice and body language can have on your audience.

These courses were developed by Toastmasters International; they include assignments to help you put your new skills into practice and peer evaluations to help you grow through collaboration. It may take a little longer to complete these courses than some of the courses in the Learning Center, but we believe it’s worth it. And as many of us are staying home due to the global COVID-19 epidemic, you can take the courses and complete assignments from home. To learn more, watch our new video.

These courses are just one of the many ways we’re investing in Rotary and Rotaract members. Practicing and improving your skills can help you succeed in your personal and professional endeavours. And using your skills within Rotary and Rotaract strengthens our clubs and increases our impact.

Please note that all Rotarians and Rotaractors with My Rotary accounts will have access to these courses. If you don’t have a My Rotary account, learn how to create one.

Letter from 9810 Interplast Chair

Dear Gabby and Len,

On behalf of the District 9810 Interplast Committee, I sincerely thank you and members of your club for its generous donation to Interplast.

Your club’s support allows Interplast to achieve its mission of enhancing people’s health and wellbeing by enabling access to life-changing reconstructive surgery and related medical services.

Interplast provides surgery for those who would otherwise not be able to access it, and deliver training and mentoring activities developing the skills and knowledge of local medical professionals in the developing countries it is invited to.

Surgical and Training Programs will be occurring in Myanmar in February 2020, in Laos in February 2020, and, then in Fiji in April 2020.  The first program was brought about by District 9810 funds accumulated from 2017 to 2019.  The second program was due to funds raised by members of the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central and, the third program was funded by the Rotary Club of Wandin.

It is amazing to know the difference that Interplast is able to achieve is due to the clubs like yours that provide funds to enable the repairing and rebuilding of people’s lives in the Asia Pacific Region.

Would you please express our appreciation to your members.

Kind regards,

PP Liz Guiver
