Last weeks meeting

Notes from last weeks meeting:
  • Joe and Mary V have been in Italy doing some skiing - they brought back a couple of certificates from the International Ski Federation, Cortina, Italy.
  • Phil is looking for someone to fill a position on the board for 2017/2018 - they will look after Fellowship - please let Phil know if interested.
  • Thursdays Bunnings BBQ raised $520.00
  • RC of Forest Hill is looking for a partner club to help them run a play "The female of the species"
Tonight's speaker was Russell Hayes from the Rotary Club of Wandin.  Russell spoke to us about Wheelchairs for Kids. This project has been going for around 20 years and has produced 36,000 wheelchairs.

Russell told us about "Early Act" clubs - these are clubs for 11 and 12 year old primary school children.  They have a sponsor Rotary club.

Russell sent through some information about Early Act clubs and this is below along with a YouTube clip and a couple of other links

The EarlyAct club at Sandridge Primary where Peter and I ran a Wheelchair Wheelathon in November is sponsored by RC Williamstown but the main coordinator is Dr Daryl Moran who is a Rotarian of twenty years and is a teacher at the school – although not a member of RC Williamstown.  He is a member at RC Rowville-Lysterfield.

A bunch of the EarlyActors from Sandridge met Gemma the founder of the school a couple of weeks ago (see photo) and now there is a good chance they will create a correspondence relationship between the two clubs.

See this brilliant YouTube video     https://youtu.be/WwtB54YzQv8

I start by sending you the info on D9800 three EarlyAct clubs.  As I mentioned tonight the RI World has not so far acknowledged the existence of this new young age Rotary club development.

The club at Baden Powell College is the creation of Julie Mason who is the principal at that school and was also DG of D9800 (I think the largest District in Australia) at the time so I think her activities could not be challenged by the hierarchy in Evanston USA.  Julie is quite amazing as she also has an Interact Club at her college.

WFK has been involved with EarlyAct at Sandridge Primary in Williamstown and we ran a Wheelchair Wheelathon there in November.  Have a look at the info on these kids though as they only commenced in 2016 and yet have already done an international project and other local community things.

I attach a copy of the bylaws and Constitution governing the EarlyAct club at Sandridge Primary in Williamstown.  These have been “Australianised”.  That EarlyAct club last year raised over $10,000 – amazing for eleven and twelve year old children in a school with ninety five students.

At first I had reservations about primary school children having a constitution to observe, a need to record minutes of meetings, have office bearer positions etc..

I have been enlightened by the teachers already involved that primary school is not too early to expose the children to these things as at secondary school they will certainly have committees etc. and to learn meeting procedures early on will better equip them for the future.

A message from James Tan...

To All My Rotarian Friends

I had my cancerous Prostate removed by Robotic Surgery on 10 February this year. The first two weeks was rather painful and inconvenient having to carry a plastic bag attached to my left lap 24/7. Once the bag was removed my appetite improved and I am recovering very well. The best outcome from my recent surgery is not only that my cancer is gone but I also lost 5 kgs since the surgery and am now a trim 75 kgs. I still suffer from incontinence and have to wear a pad 24/7. I am hopeful that with lots of pelvic floor exercises I will not have any need to wear a pad in the near future. However it is damn embarrassing and discourages me from going out socially at all.

Anyway the reason for writing this update is primarily to thank all my Rotarian friends for your telephone calls to wish me well, for visiting me when I was in hospital, for visiting me at my home, and for sending me your wish you well cards. Your concerns and well wishes were most touching and much appreciated by Wendy and I.

I hope to be 100% recovered and to return to Rotary activities in the near future. Thank you all again.

Best Regards
James Tan

Polio News - February 2017
GATES ANNUAL LETTER HIGHLIGHTS PROGRESS AGAINST POLIO

Bill and Melinda Gates, co-chairs of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, released their Annual Letter in February, highlighting gains that have been made in improving children’s health around the world. The letter was addressed to Warren Buffett, who donated the bulk of his fortune to the foundation 10 years ago. As Bill and Melinda say, the “magic number is zero” when thinking about many health challenges today, and polio is the closest to reaching this goal.
