Last weeks meeting

Notes from last weeks meeting:
  • Judith attended the International Women's Day breakfast at Box Hill Town Hall - there were 279 people there - speakers were good
  • Good to see Bruce at the meeting - he is doing well.  Has to wear a neck brace for a couple more months.
  • Bob H is organising assistance for Bruce and Joy (things like shopping etc.) - if you can assist please let Bob know.
  • Men's Health Matters forum - if anyone has ideas for sponsorships and has contacts please let Neil know ASAP
Phil M attended the President Elects training weekend - the theme for next Rotary year is "Making a difference".  Some of the key points and messages Phil shared with the meeting were:
  • we have to have a minimum of 2 meetings per month
  • look at alternatives for the Sargent sessions - for example - YouTube clips
  • Look for high value speakers
  • Induct new members in 4 weeks
  • Focus on doing not meeting
  • Facebook is our friend - food posts attract interest and members
  • Individually we need to be on Facebook
  • Our website is the gateway to the world
  • we will have access to increased resources
  • Foundation is asking for $150 per member to push the end for Polio Eradication
  • Ending Trachoma within Australia - we are the only developed country with Trachoma - it is endemic in remote communities
  • The club constitution needs updating
  • Working with Children checks will become more complex and from 1/1/2017 all paperwork must be kept in perpetuity.  The checks will be mandatory even if you want to write to someone.  No check - no contact.
  • Risk assessments need to be done for insurance purposes
Phil is looking to confirm Board positions by the end of March 2017.  There will be an informal meeting of the new board in April.  A budget wish list needs to be done in April.  Explanation of options arising from Council on Legislation changes to the Rotary constitution.

This weeks speaker was Dr Cathie Stevens talking about understanding and improving sleep.
  • She was a paramedic for 13 years and decided to change careers by training to be a psychologist specialising in sleep.
  • She is now a clinical psychologist attached to Victoria University
  • There are 4 stages of sleep - 1 and 2 are light and 3 and 4 are deep sleep. REM is when you dream.  Deep sleep happens in the first 3 hours
  • As you age, stage 4 sleep may disappear and your sleep may become lighter
  • Stage 2 sleep is known as "ambiguous" sleep - we spend 50% of our time in stage 2 sleep.
  • Adults 18 and above need 7 to 9 hours sleep per night
  • An insomniac is someone who has difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up too early.  25% of older adults have insomnia.
  • Causes of insomnia are some medications and drugs, caffeine, alcohol, stress, depression, grief and loss, late night technology, anxiety and worrying, chronic pain and illness
  • To increase your chances of having a good nights sleep - be in a quiet, dark and comfortable environment, don't use laptops, tablets and mobile phones while is bed, avoid caffeine, reduce alcohol intake, don't clock watch, use morning sunlight to strengthen your circadian rhythm, naps should be kept to a maximum of 20 minutes
  • Tips for better sleep - create a time for constructive worry and constructive thinking, muscle relaxation, mindfulness/meditation
  • restrict time in bed - don't go to bed unless sleepy and leave bed if not sleepy

A new business venture..

Peter Schoners daughter Nadia has started her own business

"I have started a new business making natural cold pressed soaps at home. My business is called ‘Heavenly Handcrafted Soaps of Australia’.

My focus is on making a luxurious soap that is gentle and nourishing for your skin (you will notice the difference) and packaging it beautifully.

I hope you can support me by forwarding this link to any networks you have to help me spread the word. It would be great if you can also click on the link and look at the website and add it to any social media sites you have."
