President`s Message

I'm back to Rotary, back to work and I've also finally settled my sleep cycle down and put an end to my jet lag.

Last Wednesday night, we got a great presentation by Sam and Nick of Ambulance Victoria, who spoke to us about how we can all give others a fighting chance to survive heart attacks, cardiac arrests or similar by performing CPR and using AEDs. We even got some showbags with information and portable practice hearts to drive home just how forcefully we have to push down to accomplish the proper chest compression.

It was great to hear about the Good Samaritan laws and to know that even if we haven't recently had certification or training, we should feel confident in doing our best to help out, something Rotarians around the world do every day in multiple ways.

Two caveats to that idea: I'll be renewing my forklift license and getting some refresher practice to ensure we have a qualified person for the playgrounds projects, and I've now got all the recent risk paperwork in hand so I can update our WWC list a bit more easily. Please be proactive and check your WWC cards. If they're out of date or approaching that point, get them renewed so there are no obstacles to some of the future youth programs we have planned or scheduled.

We had some stunning weather on Saturday, so we should hear great things about the Blackburn Lake working bee and the Bunnings sausage sizzle this Wednesday.

Coming up:

•    Committee meetings on Wednesday night, a chance to get into the details on all your projects and plans.
•    Whitehorse farmers market, 12 October.
•    Wednesday week, 15 October, John Lynch's Rotary journey.
•    Friday week, 17 October: a trip to Mont De Lancey Historic homestead: an eminently affordable day trip organised by our fellowship and fundraising committee. See Harvey for details.
•    And much more. See our website or the remainder of this bulletin for more details.

See you Wednesday!

It’s Shocktober!

Every October, Ambulance Victoria aims to raise awareness about cardiac arrest and the power of early intervention. This year, they are encouraging everyone to take action by finding their nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) or registering their AED and help to save lives in their community.

Samantha and Nick from the Nunawading station gave a very informative presentation and demonstration of the use of an AED. Everyone in attendance was given a Call, Push, Shock kit which contains a fridge magnet, a life-size poster and a rubber heart to practice compressions on. We also collected more packs and brochures to distribute at the upcoming Spring Festival.

There is a wealth of additional information on the Ambulance Victoria site including this video.

Umbrella Dementia Cafe Schedule

The Dementia Cafe is on this Wednesday and we are looking for afternoon tea donations, either store bought or homemade, something bite sized.  If you are able to provide some afternoon tea, you can either drop it off on Wednesday morning at Shia's house before 10:00am where Silvana will collect it and take it for you.  Or you can contact Silvana directly to arrange collection with her.

Thanks for your contribution, it is very much appreciated. From the Community Service Committee.

The Umbrella Dementia Cafe is scheduled for every 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at the Hollows, Level 1, Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre, 70 Middleborough Road, BURWOOD EAST.

Our Club's contribution is to provide a lovely afternoon tea, often based on a theme (see below). Contributions from you all will make it extra special. If you're able donate anything — baked goods, sandwiches, or other treats — that would be fantastic.

Please contact Silvana if you are able to assist. The more members that are involved, the better.

Club Fellowship Visit to Mont De Lancey

The Fellowship committee has proposed a Club outing to Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead in Wandin North on Friday 17th October 2025.

We can conduct a Club tour with a guide, incorporating a visit to the home and gardens as well the outbuildings and family chapel. Further on offer, are local volunteers to conduct demonstrations of wood working and blacksmithing on the day, if available. Price of the tour is $10 per person, and walking is easy. Planned tour start is at 11:00 am. The tour should take about an hour and quarter and then we can have some lunch.

The Two Peas Cafe is located on the property but run separately. It has a weekday Lunch Package for 20 or more people. Harvey suggests Option 2 ($19 pp), together with the drink station ($3 pp) for value.

All up cost for the day including the historic house & gardens tour, visit to the historic museum, drinks station and Option 2 lunch choice, is great value at $32 pp

Please contact Harvey with your early advice as to your attendance or inability to attend.
