Make a tangible difference

Last year Rotary International President Ian Risely asked every Rotarian to plant a tree during the 2017/2018 year, to further strengthen Rotary's commitment to the environment, and to use the more than 1.2 million Rotarians around the world to make a tangible difference to the health of our planet.

If you have been watching the ABC's series the War on Waste, you know that there is a lot more that we can all do to reduce waste and its impact on our beautiful country. So here is a challenge to everyone reading this bulletin - Be The Inspiration in reducing our impact on the planet when next you are enjoying a take away coffee in this wonderful city, which has the world's best coffee culture.

113 empty takeaway coffee cups are thrown away every 4 seconds in Australia.

So when you next have a coffee on the way to work or at lunchtime or as part of a day out, take your own re-usable mug for the barista to fill. This way your takeaway coffee won't contribute to the 1 BILLION cups and lids sent to landfill or littering our streets and waterways every year.

We did our bit in planting trees last year, let's also do our bit in reducing rubbish and preventing trees being cut down to make coffee cups

Meeting RSPVs
Following some recent confusion with numbers attending meetings, members are reminded that any late changes to meeting attendance should be made through Gabby and NOT directly to the restaurant. This will ensure that Ivan can prepare the correct number of meals

Hi Ho Hi Ho it's off to work we go!!
Members will recall we assisted the City of Whitehorse with their tree planting last year for National Tree Day.
Well we did it again this year.

Pictured are the team of Rotary Club of Nunawading tree planters following a couple of hours of digging and planting at Tassells Park, in Box Hill North.
Thanks to all who participated on fairly short notice.
EndTrachoma by 2020
Last year  the Rotary Club of Nunawading for the very generous donation in support of 'EndTrachoma by 2020'!

The project team has thanked us for our donation of $2,000 and asure us that it will make a real difference. They thanked you most sincerely for the hard work that went into raising this amount and thus the support wehave shown for our Australia-wide Rotary project to rid Australia of trachoma. It wasgreatly appreciated.

It is proposed that the club make a similar contribution to the cause this Rotary year – i.e. another $2,000.
PolioPlus
When Rotary launched the PolioPlus program in 1985, there were more than 350,000 polio cases in over 125 countries. Since 1988, when Rotary began working with its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to immunize more than 2 billion children, the incidence of polio has decreased 99 percent. As of 2013, Rotary’s contributions to the global polio eradication effort totaled $1.2 billion. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for Rotary’s leadership and vision.
What a wonderful legacy we are leaving to the children of the world. Goodbye Polio. Thank you, Rotary.

Fundraising for PolioPlus
What would you do to eradicate Polio? Would you shave off all your hair? Rotarians in District 5040 did just that and raised US$10,000 for PolioPlus. Would you hike 2,658 miles over six months? Rotarian Chrissy Wallace of California did to raise money for Rotary’s PolioPlus program. Would you cycle 4,165 miles on the TransAmerica Trail? Rotarian Robert Keegan of Tennessee did to benefit PolioPlus. Dedicated individuals, clubs and districts continue to promote and support PolioPlus at every opportunity possible. Many districts also give a portion of their District Designated Funds to the polio effort.
What can you do for PolioPlus?
