WHAT IS A ROTARY FOUNDATION BEQUEST SOCIETY MEMBER?
The Rotary Foundation recognises couples or individuals who have made commitments in their estate plans totalling US$10,000 or more. Donors may elect to receive an engraved crystal recognition piece and a pin commemorating the commitment at each new recognition level. A gift of at least $10,000 in your name to The Rotary Foundation creates a legacy of your generosity and compassion as you are helping many people live better lives around the world. 566 people worldwide became a Bequest Society member in Rotary year 2012-13. There are 10,035 Bequest Society Members worldwide as of 30 June 2013.
WON’T YOU JOIN THEM BY COMPLETING THIS BEQUEST SOCIETY FORM?

President Phil's Message

Failing to plan is planning to fail

At this week’s meeting I will present an outline of the three year plan that will be rolled out in January 2018. Integral to this plan is;
1.      Support for Interplast to continue its life-changing work mending the bodies of people in developing countries.
2.      Ongoing support for the Medical Imaging project led by Peter Koens.
3.      Foundation, polio plus and Australian Rotary Health initiatives.
4.      Rotary International President Ian Riseley’s Trachoma project.
5.      Support for youth programs for recipients that live or study within the Whitehorse city boundaries.

The one item that requires the most input from the club is the choice of a long-term community project within Whitehorse. The previous Cub forum and survey showed that Club members want a challenging project that will leave a lasting legacy that can be directly attributed to our Club.

We want to build infrastructure that enables the recipient to better do their job. Recent examples of this type of work are;
a.       Purchase of solar panels for Eastern Emergency Relief to reduce their power bills during the test and certification of second hand electrical goods.
b.      Purchase and erection of an equipment storage shed at Aurora school.
c.       Building planter boxes at Aurora School to help the students learn about growing and caring for vegetables.

We cannot provide funds for ongoing costs such as wages, maintenance or running expenses as these costs will commit the club to an open ended arrangement. I am calling for ideas from members for a project that will be completed over several years. Preferably the project will involve hands on work by club members and will result in something that shows our commitment to the Whitehorse community.

Funds from the Bunnings BBQ’s and Whitehorse Farmers Market will be directed to this project. There is $10,000 in the budget to kick-start this project.
If you have an idea then write it up in no more than one page and be ready to tell the Club about it this Wednesday. Please send me a copy so that I can call you up on the night. We will publish all submissions in next weeks Bulletin.

Together, we can Make a Difference in Whitehorse and be seen doing this by the community. This is not only good for the community but it will also give Club members a sense of achievement and satisfaction as well.

Last Week's Meeting - 27 September
We had quite a few visitors attend to hear our Guest Speaker Tommy Nyawir. Visitors include Rotarian Sharon Partridge (Mitcham) and her friends, Shirley and Brian Mace from Kiwanis and Sue Maxwell.

The winners of the AFL Grand Final competitions were announced:
  • First Goalkicker (Rory Sloane-Adel) No Winner
  • Norm Smith Medal (Dustin Martin - Rich) 5 Winners
  • Final Score (Richmond by 48) Bee Leow tipped the Tigers by 20.
The 2017-18 Nominating Committee was selected. The Committee comprises President Phil Maxwell, President-Elect Janette Etherington as well as Past Presidents Neil Ibbott, Judith Eadon, Bob Hoskins and Wayne Willoughby. The Committee will meet to elect a Chairman and propose nominations for the Club's Annual General Meeting on 29 November 2017.

Past Exchange Student Carina Blank also attended along with her German friends Lasa and Lukas. Carina will be based with Sue & Rob Cross and will be working and travelling whist she is here. In the photo above she is sharing around some delicious German chocolates.
Guest Speaker - Tommy Nyawir
Tommy Nyawir was accompanied by Steve Brunskill and Jen Lawson from Youth Out Loud. Tommy grew up in Kibera slum in Nairobi, KENYA.

In 2010, Tommy and his wife Judy founded a charity called The Mirror Of Hope next to Kibera slum. To paint the picture of Kibera, Africa’s largest urban slum is to picture approximately 1 million people living in an area of 2.5km2. Most families of 3-4 people (often without a father) live in a small shanty of about 3 x 3 metres with a leaking tin roof. They earn approx. $AUD 40 / month to live on providing for food, rent, electricity, water and medical needs.

Tommy was fourteen years of age and completing his eighth grade of school when his parents lost their source of income. Despite being a talented student, he had to leave school as he was unable to pay the compulsory school fees. He had always wanted to be a lawyer but instead had to remove thoughts of ever attending school again to focus on survival.
This focus on survival changed due to the kindness of a stranger who upon a chance meeting gave Tommy the funds he needed to go back to school. Tommy not only was able to finish secondary school but went on to achieve a scholarship for Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Human Development.

Mirror of Hope conducts a number of programs to help children of Kibera slums to break the cycle of poverty and unemployment through education.

Chairman Bob Hoskins urged all Members to find out more about Mirror of Hope and to consider child sponsorship or a personal donation.

Vale Sue Fenton - RC Box Hill
Dear Rotarians,

It is with deep sadness I inform you that Rotarian Sue Fenton from RC Box Hill passed away on Thursday 5th October after a short illness. Following is a message from President Tim Lynn RC Box Hill.

“Sue was inducted on 5 May 2015 and was an active and passionate Rotarian, giving valued service to our Club as a member of the Vocational Service committee in 2015-16 and, most recently, as Community Services Director for the  2016-17 and 2017-18 Rotary years.
Sue willingly and enthusiastically undertook all the duties asked of her in accordance with Rotary's "Service Above Self" motto and has served with distinction on the Club Board in her role as Community Services Director since July 2016.
We have certainly lost a loyal, conscientious and dedicated Rotarian and friend. Rest in peace, Sue!
Please keep Rotarian Rob Fenton (Secretary), their 3 daughters and the wider family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Kind Regards,

Malcolm Chiverton

Whitehorse Spring Festival - 15 October
The Rotary Clubs of the Whitehorse Cluster are once again staffing a marquee at Spring Festival at Whitehorse. It is a good public relations exercise for the Rotary Clubs as over 12,000 people are expected to pass through the Civic Centre on the day.
We are passing out Australian Rotary Health bags with men’s health information, a flyer explaining a bit about Rotary and Whitehorse Farmers’ Market book marks. Days for Girls will have a display as well.
Thanks to members who are available on the day! There is no car parking on site. Suggestion is to park in Walker Park.
THEME - BEST IN SHOW  Rainbow flags and bunting will set the scene for a ‘village fair’ inspired spectacular featuring fair-ground rides, vintage games, dog show, vegetable and floral displays and a variety of activities and entertainment to match. The community will be front and centre again this year at Spring Festival as we celebrate all the fun, fabulous and quirky talents that make Whitehorse great!
