Stories
Update on Bob Hoskins, James Tan and Bruce Simcox

Hank visited Bob H - he is using a walking stick and progressing well.  Bob hopes to come to a meeting in early March.

Hank also visited James Tan in hospital (Epworth Eastern).  James was okay after his operation.

Len B sent an email to members last week about Bruce Simcox...  Bruce fell from a ladder at his son Darren's home.  He fell a metre and landed on his head - he has an un-displaced fracture of a cervical vertebrae (C2). He has been in Box Hill Hospital.  He may need to attend rehab and will probably be in a neck brace for a few months

 To Bob, James and Bruce.......

Last weeks meeting

Notes from last weeks meeting:
  • Rotary Foundation/Polio Eradication Fund raiser - 120 people attended - the film was really good and over $3,500 raised for Polio Eradication.
  • There are 20 people attending the Red Cross fund raiser on 15 March - please make sure you pay.
  • The Egg and Bacon BBQ - still need 4 people to fill the 11 to 1pm shift - may need to make the other shifts longer to cover off.  Let Kevin know if you can assist.
  • Please make sure you register for the Geelong conference ASAP.  You can access the link via the conference website.
  • The Farmers Market - 57 stalls - $3895 raised from stall holders, $1334.00 from donations and $342 from the Egg and Bacon stall
  • RC of Box Hill Central is organising a fund raiser for Friday 3 March 2017 at the Whitehorse Centre.  It features the Navy Band.  Proceeds will go to Eastern Emergency Relief Network and Rotary projects
  • When you have finished with your Rotary Down Under magazines please bring them to the meetings for Russell.  he will distribute them to Doctors surgeries etc.
Many thanks to Joe V for attending to repairs to our Rotary wheel smiley

This weeks speaker was Jeff Steel (RC of Glen Waverley) who is part of the Districts Public Relations and Marketing committee. Jeff had some good tips regarding publicity:
  • Getting the message out so we can attract good quality members
  • What do we do - activities like the Medical Imagining Machines, End Polio, Men's Health Forum
  • Photos - we need photos of what we do - they need to show we are having fun!
  • If you want to get a story into a paper - go to the editor, I have a story for you, I have good high resolution photos, write it up for them
  • Websites - make it relevant and targeted - 45 seconds is the average time someone will visit a site so the home page needs to highlight key elements people need to know.
  • Facebook - get a lot of likes!
We also had a visit from Rotarian G.D Mallinath who is the president of the Rotary Club of Bangalore Nandini, India.  His daughter and Son in law currently live in Australia - his son in law is working with the ANZ bank.  Malli outlined some of the projects his club are involved in which include installing drinking water facilities, arranging special education programs, increasing literacy - they are aiming for 100% literacy by 2026 - India currently has 40% literacy.  They meet on Friday evenings.  They don't fund raise but donate from their own money for different projects.

Bunnings BBQ fund raiser - 16th February 2017

Today we held the first of our regular Thursday Sizzles at Bunnings in Nunawading.

A lovely day weather wise, and a not bad day sales wise.

Our Gross income was $746.60. This represented approx. 276 sausages in bread, and approx. 37 drinks - Coke was the most popular by far......

After expenses our Net profit was $500.10.

We won't need to buy bottled water or Lift for the next SS, as there is a lot left over - only Coke, so we should have a better profit next Sizzle.

We donated approx. 34 left over sausages and slices of bread to the Salvos via Major Wendy.

Thank you to Len for his wise counsel and the use of his excellent onion slicer; thanks to Sue W for helping me to cut up the onions; Wendy for bringing back all the gear; and Graeme, Suzanne, Hank, Dick, Peter B, Joe, Mary, Sue W, Max, Russell and Wendy for excellent work on the stall, and particularly the cleaning up at the end.

Best regards,

Janette
