Last weeks meeting

Notes from last weeks meeting:

No notes from the meeting
World Polio Day - 24 October 2016
24 October marked World Polio Day, which served as a moment for the world to come together to recognise progress made against polio and recommit to ending the disease once and for all.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners Rotary International and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) co-hosted the fourth annual World Polio Day event in Atlanta, featuring celebrity champions and polio experts.

Melinda Gates also lent her voice to the effort with a photo story celebrating the female health workers who dedicate their lives to ending polio and Bill Gates acknowledged the hard work of the millions of polio volunteers.

See the YouTube video.

Cup Day Celebrations at Kinglake
75 Rotarians and guests from Kinglake Ranges, Eltham, Mitcham and Nunawading convened at Kinglake West Mechanic Institute Hall on Cup Day.

Rotarian Colin Spencer (Mitcham) had sold his Redbox Winery which was formerly the location of this annual fundraiser for Aquabox. The Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges willingly picked up the baton to continue the tradition.

The AQUABOX's primary function is to provide clean drinking water from dirty contaminated water. It is a project of the Rotary Club of Eltham and is endorsed by RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service). Find out more at www.aquabox.com.au.

The fun day started with an auction of snails and a subsequent Snail Race. There were also the compulsory Rotary Raffles as well as Cup sweeps. At race time, we all watched the very close race on the gscreen.

Everyone enjoyed a healthy BBQ lunch with delicious desserts. A highlight of the day's festivities was a hilarious Phantom Race Call which (using some inside information) included a horse called BomberJohn - a formerly great performer that had just returned from suspension.

Judith presented a cheque for $550 for a Family Aquabox to Aquabox Chairman Dale Atkins.

Upcoming events at the Walter and Eliza Hall

The Club’s visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in July.

Sally Cane who showed us around in July, has advised as follows”-
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute has some upcoming events that I thought the Rotary Club of Nunawading members may be interested in.

The institute will be holding a free public event about our latest lung cancer research on 22 November at 5.30pm. Tours of the lung cancer laboratories will be also available at the event. This is a free event, but RSVP is essential.

The Biomedical Breakthroughs exhibition is currently being held at the Melbourne Museum. The exhibition brings to life the history of biomedical research in Melbourne to celebrate the centenaries of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and CSL. The exhibition is open until 20 January 2017. Further details about the exhibition can also be found in a recent Sydney Morning Herald article: www.smh.com.au/entertainment/m27cover-20160809-gqoqjz.html

I look forward to catching up with you and the Rotary Club of Nunawading members soon.

Best wishes,

Sally provided flyers on the above two events and I can forward them to any members who are interested.
