Beyond Polio
The knowledge, skills and infrastructure built to end polio are helping to make dramatic progress on improving children’s health more broadly.

For over 25 years, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has mobilized and trained millions of volunteers and health workers; reached remote and underserved households; mapped and brought health interventions to chronically neglected communities; and established standardized, real-time global surveillance and response capacity.

Going further

The knowledge, skills and infrastructure built to end polio are already helping to make dramatic progress on improving children’s health – not only reducing the number of children paralyzed by polio by over 99%, but also decreasing the number dying from other preventable diseases in countries with strong polio eradication infrastructure.

To find out more about how the polio eradication infrastructure is expanding the reach of health services, improving disease surveillance and building health worker capacity, read this factsheet which highlights just some of the broader health benefits enabled by the investments made to end this disease.

Securing these broader benefits for the future

Polio eradication will be one of the greatest public health victories of our lifetime. We need to plan now to ensure that the world will stay polio-free and that the lessons, resources and infrastructure, which are already benefitting children beyond this one disease, continue to help children for generations to come.

To make the most of this opportunity, it is crucial that governments, civil society, Ministries of Health, and donors transition some of the polio infrastructure to sustain a polio-free world and to help meet other health needs, particularly in places with weak health infrastructure. By identifying the overlap between what the polio program has to offer and country-level priorities for strengthening health systems, we can make a lasting difference to health beyond polio. We can strengthen the foundations of health by reusing the building blocks of polio eradication.

By beginning to plan now, we can keep the world polio-free and ensure that the investments made in ending polio have a broad and lasting impact on children’s health and development, long after polio is gone.

ROMAC - Bradley Bola visit update

BRADLEY BOLA VISIT AND MEDICAL PROGRAM.
29/5/16 – MID AUGUST 16
SPONSORED BY:   ROMAC   (ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID FOR CHILDREN)
ASSISTED BY:  ROTARY CLUB OF NUNAWADING

Bradley and his Mum accompanied by their host family and Norm from ROMAC attended RC of Nunawading's meeting on  13/07/2016

Since then Bradley has had further surgery.  Please see notes below

Since our last update on 27th June, much has happened with Bradley during our "Changeover Season" as Rotarians. I have transferred to the R.C.Montrose & District since the return of the "Charter from the eClub of Greater Melbourne"

.

Bradley recovered well from the re-alignment of his nose and thanks to Prof. Andrew Heggie who has been with Bradley through his years with ROMAC. We are so grateful for the dedication and skill of our surgeons in changing the lives of our patients.

During his recovery, Bradley took part is the D9810 RYLA program, thanks to the R.C.Wandin who were his sponsor club.

"The best week of my life" said Bradley as the experience and friendships sank in.

The R.C.Nunawading who took over as his sponsor club had the host family Michael & Teresa Cox to their meeting last week with the DG Carol Lawton on her Club Visit.

Thanks to Rtn. Harvey Lane who has been the club contact during Bradley's stay.

President David Hatcher on behalf of the club made a contribution to the work of ROMAC. Many thanks David & Members.

The final surgery to straighten his eyes was conducted last Friday by Dr Lionel Kowal at St Vincents Private Hospital. Such skill and support for the ROMAC program by Dr Kowal is greatly appreciated especially Bradley who has had this as a dream for many years.

He is at home with the Cox Family recovering this week but has a Guest Speaker role to address the R.C.Wandin on his RYLA and ROMAC story.

Attached are a couple of photos of the new man thanks to ROMAC.

Tours normally last about 1 hour One of their immunology researchers will give us a lab tour and talk about their research.

The club is required to provide a listing of all names for those attending by am 21st July. If you are not able to attend our meetings of 13th or 20th July to record your name, please email Roger Wilson (roger.wilson7@bigpond.com) and provide names and also confirmation whether you are dining at Naughtons Parkville Hotel after the visit. Only people whose names are recorded on the list will be admitted on the night, due to the Institute’s security requirements.

Parking: There is only limited parking at the Institute (10 spaces in their forecourt). To get to their forecourt you will need to turn at the traffic lights from Royal Parade into the street that leads to the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park. You do not enter the hospital car park, but instead should go left just before the car park entrance- towards the Institute. At the boom gate to the forecourt you will need to press the button, let reception know you are here for the tour and reception will give you access to park on the forecourt.
Alternatively park in Royal Parade or at Naughtons Parkville Hotel, 43 Royal Parade and walk down to the Institute.

Dinner:  After the tour it is suggested that we have dinner at Naughtons Parkville Hotel, 43 Royal Parade. www.parkvillehoptel.com.au. Their website contains menu plus they have a two courses for $38.50 offer.  If we have more than 20 they will give us a private area to dine in. On the night they will seat us, take your order table by table and take individual payments for what we order.
Ian Armstrong and Bob Davis have checked out the food and given it a tick. It is also recommended by the Institute.

Roger Wilson will be collecting names at our meetings on 13th and 20th July.

bits and pieces
  • Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith who will pass them onto RC of Monash.
  • Save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight! - proceeds go to ROMAC

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins!

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates this successful D9810 project.   Ron will coordinate at District level but needs help from all clubs. In the last 18 months 120kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at $4,700.64

Eammon Bryant, UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed “We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match.    Our history working with, and converting foreign coin to help children in need matched with your unparalleled reach across Australian communities, we think, makes it a dream fit”.   UNICEF works in over 190 countries to support children’s health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

So, far more than 15 clubs in the district have joined enthusiastically into this initiative.   We are 12.1kgs into the next collection.
  =
• $2 will provide a severely malnourished child enough therapeutic super food for one day
•  $6 will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine

UNICEF will also take old European coins that are no longer in circulation.

Please leave your foreign coins and notes in the jar on the desk
