Winter Is Coming - not just the catch cry of the "Game of Thrones" TV series! It is also a timely reminder that the weather is turning cool, and that there are many people in our community who are doing it tough, and can't afford warm winter clothing.
At a recent meeting we discussed the opportunity for club members to be involved in knitting (or crocheting) winter woolies for those in need - something we and/or our partners/spouses and friends can do in our spare time, or in front of the TV of a night.
There is a fabulous organisation called KnitOneGiveOne, KOGO, which donates hand-knitted woolies to people in need, through partnerships with over 250 charities, including the Eastern Emergency Relief Network, where so many members of our club/partners currently volunteer.
If you would like to knit or crochet, but don't know how, we will teach you! If you want to help but aren't crafty or don't have time, you can donate wool to be turned into jumpers, scarves, beanies or blankets. KOGO has free patterns on its' website, for some of the most popular items.
KOGO has partnerships with Lincraft, which donates supplies and money, and the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, and is currently conducting an anti-bullying campaign with both of these organisations.
So we can register our Rotary club as a contributing organisation, donate our items in the name of the club, drop them off to local pick-up points via a club meeting, and know that from there our donations will be distributed to those most in need in our community.
I'm in - so is our newest member Les, who has dusted off his knitting machine! So please let me know if you, a friend or family member would like to help. If you want to check out KOGO, here is the link:
