ROMAC - Bradley Bola visit update

BRADLEY BOLA VISIT AND MEDICAL PROGRAM.
29/5/16 – MID AUGUST 16
SPONSORED BY:   ROMAC   (ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID FOR CHILDREN)
ASSISTED BY:  ROTARY CLUB OF NUNAWADING

Bradley and his host family will visit RC of Nunawading on 13 July 2016.  This will coincide with DG Carol Lawton's visit.

Update on Bradley as at 27 June 2016

Hello all you ROMAC volunteers. We are fast approaching the end of another Rotary year but the work of ROMAC is continuing in District 9810 as we speak. Lovely to catch up with many of you at the DG Changeover last Saturday and to be involved with the life of Bradley Bola.

The "Fisherman" has returned from a week away with R.C.Wandin Rotarian Gavin & Dianne McIntyre complete with the fish and plenty of stories. His Bucket List ticked one more box yesterday when with his beloved "Melbourne Storm" Rugby League clubs help we saw the game and the win. Bradley was ecstatic and thankful to all who made it possible.

Details of preparation for his eye operation on July 15th are in hand following the check and testing provided by Dr Lionel Kowal who will do the operation.

This week will involve Bradley in fitness development and preparing for RYLA.

He has been sponsored for this wonderful experience by the R.C.Wandin to whom we give a big thank you as RYLA can be a Life Changing Experience too to our young people.

He is really progressing and developing as a wonderful young man and a credit to his families in PNG and the community here in Melbourne. We look forward to seeing him at a few Rotary Club Presentations and events over the next few weeks as an example of ROMAC at work.

Your support is greatly appreciated and club donation will ensure more children will be helped just as we have achieved with Bradley.

Norm Casey (ROMAC D9810 committee)

C.O.C.C Lunch 21 June 2016

Approximately 20 happy and joyous people attended the COCC lunch last Tuesday. Coupons were a plenty, couples were in the main, buy one get one free was the order of the day!

Young councillor, (unnamed) was lonesome in his attendance and ordered a lone meal, only to find the arrival of another lone person(unnamed but COCC would not be surprised to find him at an auction right up the front.)

Both of these gentleman approached the sweet young person taking the meal orders, to arrange for the free meal for the late arrival. You would think that these two learned gentleman would possess excellent negotiation skills, but alas the sweet young person bluntly told them to rack off!!! The coupons were no use to these lone horseman.

The meal was generally good, the flounder spent too much time out of the oven and was floundering to find some warmth. The calamari was tender and the Hamburgers were a lot bigger than ones mouth!!

Apologies were but few, with better offers as the excuse, little did they know but all happy and joyous people left the establishment with gleeful smiles on their dials.

I am aware that people are waiting with bated breath for news of the CC lunch and its location. Dates have been supplied, the location remains unknown.

The COCC is back, thanks mini COCC for organising the outing one before.

Yours sincerely

C.O.C.C

An exciting opportunity

Members should have received the email below from District Governor David Tolstrup over the weekend.

A Most Exciting Opportunity

I have taken the rare step of contacting every Rotarian in District 9810 about something that I think will generate a lot of tantalising travel thoughts.

In 2017-18 Ian Riseley, supported by Juliet, will be the Rotary International President. We are all so excited and proud about this fantastic achievement. Aligned with Ian being the World President of Rotary is the opportunity for a huge contingent of Aussies, and in particular District 9810 Rotarians to attend the 2018 Rotary International Convention in Toronto, Canada. Our plan is to recruit a large support group called "TEAM RISELEY" to be present in Toronto.

This idea therefore presents a fantastic opportunity to travel as a group and spend some time prior to the convention exploring the wonderful scenery and highlights that exist in Canada. Accordingly, we have come up with a 2018 PRE CONVENTION TOUR OF CANADA. We have included all the special aspects of Canada: Rocky Mountaineer Train travel; Lake Louise; Banff and Niagara Falls; and much more.

The attached brochure outlines the basics of the tour that has been organised. At this preliminary stage we are seeking EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST to identify what level of support will exist for this concept. The potential size of the group will determine ultimate pricing issues.

I have asked President Helen Wragg, Rotary Club of Hampton, proprietor of Global Wise Travel, to manage this project. Helen is happy to answer any questions on this project. Her contact details are:
Phone: 0418 530 800

Please register your interest with Helen by Friday August 5th

Visit to Walter & Eliza Hall Institute - July 2016

Club visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute

The visit has been arranged for 27 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.

The Institute has advised as follows:-

“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”

The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

bits and pieces
  • Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith.
  • Save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight! - proceeds go to ROMAC

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Your DSF is under huge pressure to continue raising valuable funds from Philatelic Garbology.

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

Please try -it WON'T COST YOU ONE CENT but WILL DO A LOT FOR THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins that end up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates this successful D9810 project.   He says “have a coffee jar at your registration desk each week to collect them”.   DG David said “This is a great initiative, involving little effort that could become a great source of publicity.    Ron will coordinate at District level but needs help from all clubs”   In the last 18 months 120kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at $4,700.64

Eammon Bryant, UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed “We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match.    Our history working with, and converting foreign coin to help children in need matched with your unparalleled reach across Australian communities, we think, makes it a dream fit”.   UNICEF works in over 190 countries to support children’s health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

So, far more than 15 clubs in the district have joined enthusiastically into this initiative.   We are 12.1kgs into the next collection.
  =
• $2 will provide a severely malnourished child enough therapeutic super food for one day
•  $6 will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine

UNICEF will also take old European coins that are no longer in circulation.

Please leave your foreign coins and notes in the jar on the desk

Joke of the Week

As we waited for a bus in the frosty weather, the woman next to me mentioned that she makes a lot of mistakes when texting in the cold.
I nodded knowingly. “It’s the early signs of typothermia.”
