President`s Message

It's hard to believe we're at the end of August, two months into the Rotary year.

This Wednesday will be my last meeting for two or three weeks, we'll see how I feel on the 27th after a long flight back from the States. President-Elect Shia will be acting in the role of president while I'm away -- just another hat for her to cycle through across her work, home and Rotary roles. Thank you, Shia.

Those who attended The Round this past Wednesday were treated to an all-singing, all-dancing and occasionally all-too-revealing musical performance of Grandparents Club 2, with a star turn by Gold Logie winner Lynne McGranger. It was a fun evening, and for those who got home without their car being blown off the road by high winds it was an excellent experience.

Should we be incorporating more audience participation in our weekly meetings? The jury is out.

Quite Important:

Rombe Rooftop, at Burwood Brickworks, is hosting our Donation Point for the week leading into Father's Day. Please assist us in making this a mutually beneficial relationship by promoting our Facebook post and their business.

Please share, like and comment on the short promotional video here: Rombe Rooftop RCN Donation Point Host

If you can, please follow Rombe's own Facebook page or their Instagram account. If you're at Brickworks for a movie or to get some shopping done, it's a really great spot for a cuppa or a meal.

What have we been doing?

  • The aforementioned night at The Round.
  • Depending on when you read this, the awards event at Heathmont Reserve may have already happened. I'll be able to contribute to a report on Wednesday night.
  • No more applications will be taken. Coral P will be serving as Sergeant-at-Arms going forward. Please thank her, follow her directives and pay fines as instructed.

What's up next?

  • My worlds collide tomorrow, as a contingent of club members descend on and climb the steps in front of Parliament House for a tour. Please somebody send me a text message, and I'll pop up from the subterranean depths of the Hansard corridor to say hello.
  • This Wednesday we will hear from Erin and Hajera, our club's RYLA attendees, and we'll welcome them as honorary members of RCN.

Plus of course the upcoming September Bunnings sausage sizzle -- this Saturday -- and the Whitehorse farmers market and much more.

Cheers,

Mike F

News from Ethan @ Oxford

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share the exciting news that I've submitted my final Master's thesis, and that my year in Oxford is coming to an end. On the 10th of September, I'll sit my Viva Voce exam (an oral defence of my thesis) and that will be the final piece of assessment. I'll get a bit of time at home before coming back to Oxford to start my DPhil (PhD) in October, which I'm incredibly excited for!

While I'm in Melbourne I'd love to have the opportunity to thank you for supporting me, and making this life-changing year possible. If you'd like me to speak at your club in the second half of September, please let me know and I'd love to say hi!

All the best,
Ethan Newnham

Australian Eagles Show

Australian Eagles Show - 50 Years of Hotel California is coming to Karralyka!

Friday 24 July | 7.30pm | 2hrs 30mins (including interval)

Fifty years on, Hotel California remains a cornerstone of classic rock — an iconic album that defined a generation and cemented the Eagles as rock legends. In 2026, The Australian Eagles Show, Australia’s premier tribute to the Eagles’ unforgettable sound, honours the milestone live in concert.

The show’s first set will see the band performing the Hotel California album in its entirety, followed by the second set of all the other Eagles classic hits.

Renowned for their pitch-perfect harmonies and masterful musicianship, The Australian Eagles Show is fronted by the supremely talented Michael Thompson and Shayne Browne. Backed by a powerhouse five-piece band, the show brings to life the legendary sounds that have captivated audiences for five decades.

Audiences can expect faithful recreations of timeless classics like “Desperado,” “New Kid in Town,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” and, of course, the Grammy-winning epic “Hotel California.” This tour also honours the solo hits of Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and the late Glenn Frey, offering a full-bodied tribute to the band’s enduring legacy.

The Australian Eagles Show doesn’t just perform the songs — they channel the spirit of the original band, delivering an authentic concert experience that continues to wow fans across Australia and beyond.

Whether you're a lifelong fan or discovering the Eagles for the first time, this 50th-anniversary celebration of Hotel California is an unforgettable night of music, and nostalgia.
