Presidential Pontifications
Friday night saw our Club Changeover dinner at the Kew Golf Club, where we had a very enjoyable evening with wonderful food and service and excellent company! My thanks to MC John Lynch for his good work in keeping the evening on track, and to Assistant Governor Joan Young for joining us on behalf of DG Russell Gurney.

President Phil gave an overview of the Club's achievements during the past year - a year of which he can be justifiably proud. We had some highs and lows, but Phil's personal commitment to the Club, and his determined leadership, never wavered, even when he was unwell. We have been lucky to have Phil as President, and it is an honour to take over the role of President from him, as we head into 2018-2019 under new RI President Barry Rassin.

The theme for this year is "Be The Inspiration", which is a challenge to us as individual Rotarians and to our Club as a whole. We are challenged to inspire new members to join our Club; to inspire our local community with our contribution to projects which will make our community fairer and a better place to live; and to continue to inspire the non-Rotary world with our broader vision to eliminate Polio, end Trachoma, fix broken lives through Interplast and ROMAC - to name just a few of our opportunities to do good in the world.

Janette
Guest Speaker - Salvation Army Social Services
Jenny Begent is the National Social Services Manager for the Salvation Army. She is responsible for an annual budget of $1.2 million.

Jenny told us that homelessness was the biggest problem facing Australia. The rate is 50 persons per 10,000 and includes rough sleeping, "couch surfing" and sleeping in a car. The Problem was first identified in the Vertigan Report (1996) and it has worsened considerably since. Every night, across Australia the Salvation Army accommodates 16,000 adults (not including accompanying children).

The largest group of homeless people is single women over 50. This group is often subjected to physical, mental and financial abuse and their situation can deteriorate rapidly. Unfortunately, there is no "exit point" response for this group to alleviate their situation.

The effects of long-term homelessness are very profound. Those affected have no social skills, underlying mental health problems and are unable to live independently.

Jenny suggests that we can lobby local, State and Federal governments to place a higher priority on this long-term problem that should not exist in our society.
Paul Harris Award for Judith Eadon

Past President Judith Eadon was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow - Sapphire at our Club Changeover on 29 June. The award was presented to Judith by outgoing President Phil Maxwell, in recognition of the tireless work Judith has done over the past year. Judith has worn many hats the last 12 months - Club Secretary & Minute Secretary, acting Chair of the Youth Service Committee, Chair of the District Youth Service Committee, Governor's Special Representative, and mentor to the new "NewGen" Satellite club members.

Judith was also presented with a PHF - 2 Sapphire award at District Changeover, which recognised her outstanding contribution to the District across a number of different roles. Judith is a Rotarian who never says "no" when asked to help or when something needs doing. We are proud to have her as a member of the Rotary Club of Nunawading.

Congratulations Judith - and very well done!
