8th February 2026

This week's meeting will be at the Blackburn Hotel

President's Message
Hello again,

I was absent last week, but I read the summary of the club forum on membership with interest. I think there's a lot in there for all members.

Rotary used to be a household name. Membership was a form of status; it meant you were a person with some credibility, some skills, some connections and had ethics. It might mean that to some portion of the population in Australia now, but it's no longer widespread. Brand recognition is weaker than it once was.

It's therefore harder to get new members. You have to provide some context. You might start by providing some basic questions people might have. What is Rotary? What's the structure like? Are there rules? What's the background? Is it a religious organisation? None of which, to be perfectly honest, is guaranteed to be interesting to somebody who isn't sure how this is relevant.

One of the greatest recruitment stories I ever heard in the Rotary world was from somebody who'd been studying in Europe and was at least halfway through a project to map out the physical accessibility ratings for buildings in the city they were in before they realised they were in a Rotaract club.

We are what we do. More specifically, the Rotary Club of Nunawading is the sum of the projects it delivers, the service it provides to people in need and the members who make it all happen. Not every member is equally emotionally invested in every project or activity the club takes part in, but as a club we are more than a collection of people working in parallel.

So, I hope we can take note of and take action on some of the ideas raised at the forum. Invite people to help with projects, your own or others'. Take note of good upcoming speakers and think about whether you know anybody who might want to listen to their presentation. Ask for help promoting your project on social media or similar.

Rotary is continuing to do a great job helping others, and this club is much stronger than many in Australia. Please look for ways to help keep it strong, to get our name and what we do out into the community and to ask others to join us in the work we do.

This Wednesday, our own member and Secretary Katy Evans will speak about the Rotarian Behind the Badge.
  • 18 February: District Governor Peter Behm will join us.
  • 25 February: James Tan's Chinese New Years' Dinner.
And as a final note: This Wednesday's Umbrella Dementia Cafe catering signup form is fully booked, which is an excellent result. Please use the volunteer module for any and all events requiring human labour and use social media to push them out beyond the club and our mailing list.

Thanks, and see you Wednesday,

Mike F

Chinese New Year Celebration

Our annual Chinese New Year Dinner is tentatively scheduled for a 7.30 pm start on Wednesday, 25 February 2026 at Nan Yang Flavour Kitchen located at Lot 1/15 Andersons Creek Road, Doncaster East. This is a tentative booking only for three tables as I have to confirm this booking with the restaurant by Monday, 09 February 2026.

This special banquet menu that the restaurant has issued for the Chinese New Year season is as follows:

  • Salmon Yee Sang
  • Crab meat Shark's Fin Soup
  • Abalone Prosperity Treasure Pot
  • Steamed Chilled Golden Pompret
  • Buddha's Delight
  • Braised Pork Knuckle in Auspicious Sauce
  • Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice with Chinese Preserved Meat
  • Dessert (Sweet Longan & Sea Coconut Soup)

Salmon Yee Sang, the first dish in the menu, is ALWAYS a MUST HAVE at all Chinese New Year Banquets. Click here to better understand the history and significance of this dish. You will be fascinated by the history and background of the dish from Malaysia, my previous homeland.

This year is the "Year of the Horse" which falls on 17 February 2026. For the next 15 days this festive season will be celebrated with great gusto by the Chinese Diaspora throughout the world including in Australia particularly in Chinatowns in all our capital cities. Even in our local Box Hill at Station Street.

For those Rotarians intending to bring their own wine I believe there will be a corkage charge. I will be negotiating with the restaurant how much the charge will be, most likely a charge per bottle.

This year I managed to locate this restaurant with a more reasonable cost. As I will be required to pay the restaurant the total cost at the conclusion of the dinner, as well as to lock in our booking, I will require payment up front from all attendees.

I would be grateful if I could have a “show of hands” by email from Rotarians that will be attending by 9th February.

International Women's Day Breakfast 2026

  • The price is $70.00 for Rotarians and students.  $75.00 for general admission/non-Rotarians
