Celebrating Father’s Day

Sue and I have just got back from a very long breakfast at a local coffee shop. The food was good and the coffee was excellent. It was a nice way to celebrate Father’s Day.

The coffee shop is owned by a lovely Greek / Australian couple who we have come to know over the last two years living in Parkdale. They have a son and daughter in late primary school. The father works six days a week and is always at the shop over the weekend. They are wonderful people, excellent hosts, good managers of people and decent human beings. Today their children are probably with their grandparents and will see their dad when he gets home about six this evening.

How will their children view their early life when they grow up? Will they resent their father always being away working when they wanted to spend time with him? Or will they be motivated to achieve their goals using their father’s commitment as their inspiration? Only time will tell.

With daughters living hectic life styles it wasn’t possible for Sue and I to tee up a meeting today, so a rain check was required. That is life. The girls and I will get together soon and enjoy each other’s company.
I am sure that you have times when the tradition of getting together on a given day just doesn’t happen.

However you are celebrating Father’s Day, enjoy yourself and be kind to those who could not be there. The most important part of Father’s Day is that you care.

Survey for Rotarians - Centre for Eye Research Australia

The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA)  is seeking support from Rotarians in regard to a not-for-profit research project. The CERA is looking for people to undertake a short online survey that will assist with its project. The aim of the project is to bring online vision testing to people’s homes in rural and remote communities. I am forwarding this link and information to you so that you can share it with your Club as you see fit.

Background
CERA is a not-for-profit research institution affiliated with the University of Melbourne and ranked in the top 4 globally. It was selected as winner of the 2016 Google Impact Challenge to develop a vision screening test that can be used on a smartphone. This will be beneficial to people in remote and rural areas who lack easy access to eye care services.

Survey
The first part of the project is to find out about peoples attitudes in relation to doing a mobile vision screening test. They are seeking as many Rotarians as possible to complete the survey (at the below link) and will use the responses to help work out how to develop the system.

What can you do
Feel free to forward this email to the members of your Club seeking their support to complete the survey. Try it yourself - it is quick, easy and anonymous and hopefully will lead to an outcome that helps the community.

Polio Update - August 2017
Dear polio eradication supporter,

The UK announced £100 million in additional funding for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), building on a series of generous commitments from global leaders, donors and affected country governments, totalling more than US$1.3 billion since June. These funds will allow health workers to continue to go to every house in every village in all conditions in order to vaccinate the hardest-to-reach children and end polio once and for all.
