It is 12 months since we lost our friend and fellow Rotarian Kevin Thomas - many, many years too soon. So today I would like to pay tribute to our club's sorely missed members - Kevin, John Munro, Bruce Solibakke, and Max Drayton. They helped to make the world a better place through their service to Rotary and their community, and we are the richer for having known them. They have all been "called to higher service" - so we will do our best to honour their memories with our own service to our community and our commitment to Rotary's ideals.
At our meeting on 29 May, Peter Cribb (Rotary Club Flemington) spoke to us on the amazing work being do to bring playground equipment to children in Sri Lanka and Timor-Leste through Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds (RORP).
Research identified that councils, schools and community organisations recycle their playground equipment on a regular basis due to changes in Australian Standards, wear and tear, fear of litigation and these all finish up in landfill. Until now!
Using the Donations in Kind organisation and with support from the Municipal Association of Victoria, Peter and his team are collecting these playgrounds, repairing elements, and shipping the pieces to third world countries where it is reassembled, much to the delight of the local children.
Peter implored us to assist by identifying playground about to be replaced, and if possible offering assistance to manage the dismantling and arrange the transfer and storage at DIK prior to transport to its new home.
Peter Receives a certificate of appreciation from President Elect Gabby
