Lyn Heppner We were privileged to have Lyn Heppner speak to us last week. Lyn spent about 17 years as Personal Assistant to His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Tilal of Jordan and shared some of her experiences of that period with us. A series of photographs of ancient architectural structures served as a backdrop to her presentation. She spoke briefly of the history of Jordan from around 500 BC onwards, and then told us of what a wonderful personal and educational experience this had been for her. The Prince is renowned for his humanitarian work, and his work and the many honours he has had bestowed on him can be found at What I found even more engaging were the stories of a prince who preferred to do business under a mulberry tree, and would lose himself in early Afghan poetry, the cultural niceties of involved in business communication in the Orient , Bedouin weddings and so much more. She immersed herself in the culture and developed enduring friendships, speaking to us about several aspects of life in Jordan and dispelling some of the generalised misconceptions we in the Occident have about the position of women in Islamic society.
