This week I am so proud to let all our readers know that our Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner held last Friday night in aid of Interplast raised well over $5,500! Our goal was $5,000, so we are beyond excited to have reached well over that figure.
We had a wonderful night, and everyone entered into the Christmas spirit - helped along by music from "Soundcheck", a Barber Shop Quartet who donated their time to keep us entertained. 139 Rotarians and friends enjoyed a 3 course Christmas dinner with an Italian twist at the Whitehorse Club, with enthusiastic participation in a Silent Auction, Live Auction, raffle and lucky door prizes, and some very generous spending on the auction items.
In the next few days the accounts will be finalised, and the club members will be thrilled to know that a cheque is on its way to Interplast to help this fantastic organisation and its volunteer doctors and nurses continue to Repair Bodies and Rebuild Lives across the Asia-Pacific.
A huge thank you to all who helped with the event - whether it was through donations, helping to plan, set-up the venue, by getting together groups of friends to attend, by buying hotly contested auction items, or by just being there. However 1 Rotarian must be singled out for individual praise - Harvey Lane, who is on the District Interplast Committee - did both the club and Interplast proud with relentless effort over the last month to make the night as good as it possibly could be.
Thank you to everyone who helped us raise money for Interplast - and we hope to see you all again next year!
From November 1978 to late January 1979 I spent two months in the historic town of Springfield Massachusetts, working in a pilot production facility at Monsanto’s Indian Orchard plant. At that time Monsanto had a policy that any travel over eight hours was First Class, so I was up the pointy end and in the upstairs bar of the 747 on my international flights. When not working I drove around New England, went to a Whalers/ Soviet Allstars ice hockey game (saw Gordie Howe playing with his sons) and spent New Years Eve in Niagara Falls.
At the meeting a couple of weeks ago, we passed around a bucket collecting money for the draught affected farmers of NSW. I am pleased to report that we collected $495 on the night.
It is not too late if you still want to donate to this worthy cause.

Our resident Magistrate is unable to attend Shaws Road Winery but he imparted these words of wisdom:
Sorry, and very unfortunately I can’t make it for my work roster has me working in the Sunday Day Court at Melbourne Magistrates Court on the 9th September.
I hope a disciplined designated-driver system will operate with all vehicles properly registered roadworthy and environmentally in order. The police in the Yarra Valley region are, according to my sources, officiously red hot and gangs of Rotarians are being targeted. Volvo drivers are not protected.
Matching people with money for positive results In the words of Arch Klumph: “Money alone does little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a godsend to civilization.” Your financial resources combined with your time, energy and talent is critical to Rotary’s mission. 89% of your contribution goes directly to the programs of The Rotary Foundation while 2% is used for administration and 9% is for fundraising. These percentages are remarkable among charities across the world. This is why The Rotary Foundation gets such high marks from organizations that rank charities, such as Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. As Rotarians, there is no better place to donate our money. We get to use our own contributions to do good in the world.
Being a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member What can you get for US$100 dollars these days? A pair of shoes, a nice dinner for two or a stove for a needy family in rural Guatemala, A contribution of US$100 to the Annual Fund will make you a Sustaining Member of The Rotary Foundation but it also provides life-changing opportunities for those in need. When you choose to support our Rotary Foundation you are making a difference in two ways: you are changing lives and you are literally saving lives. What an amazing thing to be able to say!
