Hon Ted Baillieu, President Con Proussalis (RC Eltham), PP Len Brear (RC Nunawading)
A most interesting Ted Talk last Thursday evening at Rotary Club of Eltham!
The Hon Ted Baillieu (RC Glenferrie) in his role as Chairman of the Victorian ANZAC Centenary Committee spoke at length about the Committee's focus on sharing of stories to preserve our ANZAC legacy for today's and future generations to honour the sacrifice of our war veterans and those who loved them, and make the connections between those ANZAC veterans and their descendants.

Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith. Thanks to the members who have already given me some. RC Monash was delighted on Wednesday morning!
Also save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight!

I have now been in Germany for just over a month and I am loving every moment, I have settled in with my family and I am getting into the swing of my school and social life.
My district 1870 here in Germany is small in area but large in members and clubs my district is hosting over 50 inbounds and send close to the same number. This has been amazing for myself getting to meet not just Germans but people from all over the world.
Two weekends ago nearly all the inbounds (50 or more) got together in the city of Dusseldorf to celebrate Karneval (Carnival). This is a pre-lent celebration which goes for 4-5 days. The Karneval is especially huge where I live as many of my close cities are fighting for the best Festival. During the weekend you MUST be dressed in a costume, I as the Australian representative went as a Kangaroo, accompanied by a joey in my costumes very own pouch, this pouch also came into use for the final day of Karneval where there is a huge parade down the cities main streets. The parade had floats and dancers and all sorts of weirdly dress Germans dancing and sing, the pouch was needed to catch the lollies and toys thrown off the parade floats for the crowed as we yelled “Helau’ at the top of our lungs.
I have been nicknamed Elsa (the Snow queen from Disney's movie Frozen) because my town had not seen snow all winter until my first morning where I woke up and opened my window to fresh snow and then almost two weeks of snow to follow that. I had never seen snow falling before so you can imagine my surprise and excitement not bothering to put a coat on before running outside (which I regretted immediately). My two younger host sisters and I spent our afternoons making snow men and going sled riding, while my second host family took me on a day trip, to go cross-country skiing.
I am soon to head off on My euro tour and will be sure to send many photos!
Carina will be participating in the "Ride for Research" an Australian Rotary Health fundraising event that starts straight after the Ballarat Conference. She is looking for sponsorship.
The ride goes from Ballarat to Ballarat via Colac, Great Ocean Road, Port Fairy Fairy and Horsham. The riders will ride between 75kms and 125kms a day depending on their group.
I can tell you from personal experience that it is not easy to get on your bike and ride in all sorts of weather up and down hills for 6 days. By day 3 or 4 the bum really starts to hurt and the legs get tired.
Please let me know if you wish to contribute. I will co-ordinate the collection of payments and the issuance of receipts.
A most interesting panel discussion for R C Box Hill Central's inaugural International Women's Day breakfast on Work/ Life Balance - Good for me, Good for business. Held in the beautiful art deco Box Hill Town Hall it's a mustn't miss for next year!!
Know the speaker's title or position. Do not turn and ask the speaker "Is it Associate or Assistant Professor?"
Be brief. Aim for between 45 seconds and two minutes. Five minutes is too long.
Smile and be enthusiastic in tone, gesture and choice of words.
Know enough about the subject to sound knowledgeable. Do not turn to the speaker and ask if the topic is epidemiology, epistemology or episiotomy.
Announce the speech title as given to you by the speaker. If you have any questions about it, ask the speaker before the introduction. Many speakers select specific titles for a reason or for a pun. If the speaker is not using a title, make sure that your description matches the speaker’s.
Introductions are no place to use slides, overheads or presentation software.
< > are good but should pertain to the subject and be in harmony with the mood of the presentation. Avoid using canned jokes.
If the credentials of the speaker are so outstanding that they must be shared with the audience or if there are publications the audience will want to know about, insert them in the program or prepare a separate commemorative handout.
Never use the old cliché that the speaker needs no introduction. If the introduction ties the speaker to the audience and the topic then each introduction is unique, plus there is always something new about every speaker. There may be audience members who don’t know the guest.
You are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject. Do not dwell on your relationship with the speaker, even though he or she is your boss, relative or significant other.
Thanking a guest speaker
Be brief.Do not repeat the speech.
Again, you are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject.
If there is a presentation do not say this is a ‘small token of our appreciation’.
Rather ‘We would like you to accept this gift in appreciation of your time spent with us this evening.’
Ask the audience to thank the speaker with acclamation.
