DO ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS HAVE TO BE DONE THROUGH THE FOUNDATION?

The answer is no; however, it is a wonderful way to get involved in your community. Community Service projects are born when Rotary clubs from two or more countries join together to accomplish a community service project. These projects link and connect ideas from Rotary Clubs needing extra help with Cubs in other countries that are willing to provide funds, materials and technical and professional assistance.

Please share your service projects with the Rotary world and friends of Rotary by going to ideas.rotary.org and then sharing your project on Rotary Showcase.

President Phil's Message

What a great District Conference!

Last weekend eight Nunawading Rotarians and three partners enjoyed the ambience of Bendigo and the company of Rotarians for the District 9810 annual Conference. Bendigo has always been one of our favourite places to visit. The old bookshops are great and the fashion exhibitions at the gallery have attracted Sue. Our daughters were scarred for life when the “talking tram” did not actually hold a conversation with them. (They were two and four years old at the time)

The conference venue, based around the old jail, was excellent. Any troublemakers could be easily contained in the original cells that form part of the entrance to the conference auditorium.

My highlights were;
  • Professor Iain Killackey who described programs to return mentally ill clients to the workforce. This successful program was funded by Australian Rotary Health for around $50,000 when the Professor was a graduate student. This investment has attracted over $6 million to date and has been highly successful in returning patients with mental illness to work. Without ARHF, this program would never have begun.
  • Kirsty Sword-Gusmao AO who talked with passion about her adopted country, Timor Leste. Kirsty grew up in Bendigo and married the leader of Fretelin, Xinana Gusmao. She outlined the simple village based programs that were implemented to reduce mother and baby mortality. We know from Peter and Lesley’s visit to Timor that there is a desperate need for all forms of aid.
  • Tom Gleisner regaled us with his journey from the Melbourne University Law Review through The Castle, The Dish and the many Working Dog productions. Public servants have complemented / accused him of depicting them in “Utopia”. Barnaby Joyce was mentioned as a plot line for future episodes. Thank goodness that a new series of Utopia is in the pipeline. Tom and his wife also started the Learning for Life Autism Centre that was presented by Mary Muirhead at the conference.
  • Who could forget the younger generation and their magnificent contribution. From the Exchange Students, winner of the speech contest, Interact, Rotaract and Earlyact. I loved the students from the Robots Invention Club and would like to follow them up as a future program for our Club.
  • On top of all the inspiring talks, we won third prize at the dinner on Saturday night! Thanks Maria for arranging the costumes. Thanks also to PP David for getting a great rate at the Art Hotel. Bob has fond memories of staying there when it was the Nurses Home for the Bendigo Hospital. Maybe a fine is in order there!
The Conference next year is at the Melbourne Conference Centre and will encompass four of the five Rotary Districts in Victoria. So come along, it is a great experience.

Why RAWCS?

Rotary Australia World Community Service

Why use RAWCS to assist you when your Club does an overseas project or when it wishes to do a benevolent project within Australia, providing direct relief to people in need?

RAWCS is set up as a national business by the District Governors of Australia so that Rotary Clubs within Australia may take advantage of The Federal Governments Taxation concessions by providing a centralised reporting organisation whilst at the same time allowing the individual Clubs autonomy and ownership of projects to be maintained. The Rules of RAWCS define the authority and identify the framework.
In addition RAWCS provides a public list of all current projects including information of any assistance (Costs, Manpower, Equipment) being requested by the Project Manager.

The RAWCS Programs include:
•        Rotary Overseas Aid Fund
•        Rotary Australia Benevolent Society
•        Dick Smith Matched Funding Grant
•        Rotary Australia Relief Fund
The RAWCS Activities Include
•        Volunteers
•        Donations in Kind
•        Rotarians Against Malaria
•        Water and Sanitation Programs

RAWCS IS NOT THE ROTARY FOUNDATION, BUT A RAWCS PROJECT CAN ALSO BE A ROTARY FOUNDATION PROJECT
RAWCS does not compete with the Foundation. It is there to benefit a Club with an overseas project that can also include a Global or District Grant. They can work together.

RAWCS offers an online donation facility to accumulate your funds and Tax deductibility for donations.

Complete information is to be found on the National Website at - http://www.rawcs.org.
To find the first document select Key Documentation – Presentations, then select
This document provides an excellent concise list of reasons for using RAWCS for overseas projects. Additional ‘How to’ presentations on the same page complete the learning process.
