Graeme Chester from Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) gave us an update on the program which gives life saving and life changing surgery to children. They have treated over 400 children since 1988 by bringing them to Australia for their operations. Surgeons and nursing staff give their time and expertise for free.
Challenges are :- Poor communication problems in remote villages, lack of available hospital beds and insufficient funds.
We happily donates to ROMAC each year.

2015 Conference Report
22 happy Chinese gold diggers went off to seek fame and fortune in Ballarat this weekend. Fame and fortune I am not sure but FUN, FELLOWSHIP were very much achieved!
The speakers were amazing. Ken Lay, Steve Moneghetti and Barb West were my favourites from the more well-known speakers but I was blown away by some of the speakers who were talking about their experiences with Rotary programs or Rotary partnerships. Tanya Miletic talking about where National Youth Science Forum has taken her was just fabulous.
The Club Fellowship dinner at the Boat shed was just the loveliest venue and enjoyed by all even if some had to walk back to the motel! Well done Harvey! The Gala Dinner was great and getting dressed up was fun.
Over the weekend as well as the fantastic inspiring and thought provoking speakers we  were lucky enough to be entertained by a dance exhibition a comedian, an opera singer and by a gospel choir which provided us with a mix of styles of entertainment .   Well done to Tony and his team!
Next year the conference is at Shepparton - hope to see you there!

Some quotable quotes
Lt (ret) Peter Leahy - ‘Peace is a process not a destination’.
African proverb - ‘If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together’
Steve Moneghetti AM- ‘Live, Learn, Lead and leave a Legacy’
Ken Lay former Chief Commissioner Victoria Police- ‘The standard you walk past is the standard you accept’
Professor Paddy Dewan surgeon - ‘Heads and hands, knives and forks’

Introducing a guest speaker
  1. Know the speaker's name and how to pronounce it.
  2. Know the speaker's title or position. Do not turn and ask the speaker "Is it Associate or Assistant Professor?"
  3. Be brief. Aim for between 45 seconds and two minutes. Five minutes is too long.
  4. Smile and be enthusiastic in tone, gesture and choice of words.
  5. Know enough about the subject to sound knowledgeable. Do not turn to the speaker and ask if the topic is epidemiology, epistemology or episiotomy.
  6. Announce the speech title as given to you by the speaker. If you have any questions about it, ask the speaker before the introduction. Many speakers select specific titles for a reason or for a pun. If the speaker is not using a title, make sure that your description matches the speaker’s.
  7. Introductions are no place to use slides, overheads or presentation software.
  8. < > are good but should pertain to the subject and be in harmony with the mood of the presentation. Avoid using canned jokes.
If the credentials of the speaker are so outstanding that they must be shared with the audience or if there are publications the audience will want to know about, insert them in the program or prepare a separate commemorative handout.
  9. Never use the old cliché that the speaker needs no introduction. If the introduction ties the speaker to the audience and the topic then each introduction is unique, plus there is always something new about every speaker. There may be audience members who don’t know the guest.
  10. You are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject. Do not dwell on your relationship with the speaker, even though he or she is your boss, relative or significant other.

    Thanking a guest speaker
  11. Be brief.  Do not repeat the speech.
  12. Again, you are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject.
  13. If there is a presentation do not say this is a ‘small token of our appreciation’.
Rather ‘We would like you to accept this gift in appreciation of your time spent with us this evening.’
  14. Ask the audience to thank the speaker with acclamation.
