Stories
Last weeks meeting

Notes from last weeks meeting:
  • Welcome to Senior Seargent Megan (Judith is her mentor)
  • 2 Youth Forums held - one last Wednesday 22/02 and the other on Tuesday 28/02 - they attracted good numbers (80 and 100 attendees respectively)
  • Lesley advised her and Peter attended the RC of Dili and RC of Darwin
  • If you want envelopes to distribute for the collection of used stamps please see Neil
  • Judith will be one of 5 members of the District Nominating Committee for District Governor 2019/2020
  • Bob H advised he saw Bruce S at rehab in Donvale - Bruce hopefully will go home late this week or early next week.  he sends his regards. Both Joy and Bruce need to attend  physio and neither are able to drive - if you can offer transport please contact Bob H
  • Fund raising idea:  Olive picking on the 1st weekend of June - in Euroa. From this 150 litres of organic Olive oil would be produced which we can sell - there was interest from a number of people at the meeting - looking for 10 to 12 couples to pick around 1 tonne of olives

This weeks speaker was our own COCC Kevin Thomas doing Person behind the badge.  Kevin gave us a great insight into his life and showed what a humorous and compassionate person he is.
  • He was born on 4 August 1952 and is one of 5 children - has 2 sisters and 2 brothers.  He grew up on a farm 10 miles out of Warrnambool in a town called Purnim
  • His Mum was born in 1919 at Geelong.  His Dad was one of 13 kids and played for Mortlake Football team.  Kevin has 68 first cousins on his Fathers side!
  • His Mum and Dad met in Warrnambool and came to Melbourne in 1956.  They moved to Glen Iris.  Kevin is one of 23 grandchildren
  • For schooling he attended St Roch's in Glen Iris, Marcellin College, Swinburne Senior Secondary School and Caulfield Institute where he studied fine art for 3 years.
  • He then moved to Sydney to join the Vincentian Seminary and stayed there for around 18 months - he then attended Corpus Christi in Melbourne for around 2 years - he was asked to leave the seminary (Kevin will be happy to elaborate if you ask him nicely!!)
  • He went to work as a youth worker at Turana Youth Training Centre in Parkville where he met his future wife Janne.
  • They married in 1979 - the reception was at Quat Quatta
  • Joined Government in 1980 and worked at the Department of Youth Sport and Recreation then went to the Office of Housing where he ended up managing all of the community based housing.  He spent the last 20 years of his career in the Public Sector dealing with complaints against the Office of Housing.  He really enjoyed this role as it allowed him to influence changes to processes that may not otherwise have happened.
  • In 1980 and 1982 his son and Daughter were born.  His son Andrew is 36 and married to Emma - they have a son called Flynn.  Andrew is an Assistant Principal.  Natalie lives in England and is engaged - she will get married in August 2017. There is no work for Natalie in Australia - her fiancé works in housing in London.
  • Kevin retired around 4 years ago and worked in the community housing sector after that doing consulting.  He is the Secretary of Eastern Emergency Relief Network.
  • He was diagnosed with Liver cancer 3 years ago and had surgery to remove.  He currently has the all clear but is tested regularly.
  • He has been with Rotary for 13 years and loves it.

My Mother taught me INTUITION...

My Mother taught me to MEET A CHALLENGE...
"What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you... Don't talk back to me!"

My Mother taught me HUMOR...
"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."

My mother taught me RELIGION....
"You better pray that stain will come out of the carpet."

My mother taught me about my ROOTS...

My mother taught me about STAMINA....
"You'll sit there until all that spinach is finished."

My mother taught me about JUSTICE...
