This weeks speaker was Jim McPhee from the Rotary Club of Monbulk.  Jim has written a book called "Tin legs and Toasting Forks"  - it is about the challenges he has faced in his life after he had a leg removed from the hip due to bone cancer.

He was born in Thornbury in 1934. One morning when he was eleven and a half years old he woke with tremendous pain and swelling in his left knee.  Jim was diagnosed with Osteo-genic Sarcoma.  He had to spend time in the Children’s Hospital where he had to wait a month before his parents were permitted to visit. He found that very cruel and very lonely as there no children of the same age. Later he was transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he had X-ray therapy, now known as radiation.

He continued with this therapy as an out-patient whilst trying to do things such as riding a bike.  He then had to return to hospital and had his left leg amputated at the hip in 1947 when he was just 13 years old.

The high light of that time was the visit from some Collingwood Football players and the photo of him with them being on the back page of the Sun Newspaper while on the front page was the announcement of the engagement of Princess Elizabeth to Phillip Mountbatten.

The Chaplain in trying to cheer him up suggested the good thing with one leg, he need only to polish one shoe! He learned to walk with crutches, learnt to play table tennis, cricket and golf.  He learnt to drive a car when he was 18 and used a toasting fork to press the accelerator. His first prosthesis was made of aluminium. He named it "Oscar".  The second was made of wood.  He married at the age of 27 and due to all the radiation therapy he and his wife Sandra were unable to have their own children but adopted 3 children.  He did have his own business at one point and retired only a few years ago.
