Phil & Sue Maxwell welcome their first Grandchild

On Saturday 16th April our eldest daughter, Felicity, and her husband, Dave, welcomed their boy Arnie into the world. Arnie is thriving and Felicity and Dave are settling into their new life. He was a sizeable lad at 3.9 kg and has put on over 600 gms in the first week at home.

Thanks for all the good wishes to Sue and I on this wonderful occasion. We are enjoying being Nanna and Pa and the many cuddles that come our way.

Congratulations to Phil and Sue on the safe arrival of their 1st Grandchild

2016 Model United Nations Assembly

This past weekend saw the District 9810 Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) held at Parliament House in Spring Street.  MUNA is an International Youth Program and has been running in Australia since 1980.  It is aimed at increasing students knowledge about international affairs and also to give them an understanding about the UN General Assembly.  Schools are approached to enter teams of two from Year 11.

All up there were 41 teams entered sponsored by around 25 clubs.  Each team is allocated a UN member country - the countries represented included Australia, Germany, Thailand, USA, South Korea, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Iran, Iraq, Sweden and Malaysia to mention a few.

The teams dressed up in the national costumes of their countries to add to the flavour of the event.  They also research the culture and politics of their country so they can engage in debate from the perspective of that country.

Teams debate "resolutions" and present for and against arguments, The chamber is presided over by a "Secretary General".

This year, the RC of Nunawading sponsored a team from Blackburn High School. They represented Malaysia.

The debating was fast and furious, sometimes feisty, often passionate and with infusions of wit.  Topics included decriminalising illicit drugs, using drones and robots during combat and refugee allocation.   Many delegates spoke very well and had clearly put a lot of preparation into the event.

And the winners were:

1st      Malaysia

2nd     Germany

Best costume - The Ukraine

Honourable mention:  Brazil

Student Choice:  Turkey

Best resolution submitted:  Brazil

Our girls from Blackburn High School will now go to join 20 other District winners in August 2016 at Old Parliament House, Canberra for a national MUNA event.

Visit to Walter & Eliza Hall Institute - July 2016

Club visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute

The visit has been arranged for 27 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.

The Institute has advised as follows:-

“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”

The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

In April I will seek the members views on what areas they have an interest in being covered during the visit.

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Your DSF is under huge pressure to continue raising valuable funds from Philatelic Garbology.

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

Please try -it WON'T COST YOU ONE CENT but WILL DO A LOT FOR THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

  • Don't forget to save your foreign coins and notes - there is a jar to put them in at the weekly meetings

Quote of the Week

On Mother’s Day I have written a poem for you. In the interest of poetic economy and truth, I have succeeded in concentrating my deepest feelings and beliefs into two perfectly crafted lines:
      You’re my mother,
      I would have no other!

~Forest Houtenschil, c.1979
