July 8 2015 meeting wrap up
Past President Sue presented a cheque for $9000 to Ian Armstrong who is the chairperson of Eastern Emergency Relief based in Mitcham. The funds will be used to install solar panels in order to reduce EER's significant power bills.
.
The speaker for the evening was David Howlett accompanied by his partner Jeanette.
David spoke about the experiences he and Jeanette had whilst on a 2 year volunteer mission to a rural hospital called St Michaels Guilleme Community Hospital in Malawi. David applied through Australian Volunteers for International Development Group for a position as a mentor manager and fund raiser. Both David and Jeanette have backgrounds in health - David as a Director and CEO and Jeanette as a Medical Practitioner who specializes in Children and Family health including Mental health.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world - 40% of government revenue is foreign aid
The hospital had a catchment of around 20,000.
The hospital had no stable power source which meant unnecessary/avoidable deaths. No power also meant no water.
David and Jeanette did a lot of fund raising to finance the installation of solar power, computers and to equip a new outpatients building.
They implemented a management system that supported greater interaction between clinical staff and the nuns to ensure better outcomes for patients - no longer left to "Gods will". Also implemented a more robust financial system. UNICEF only supplied essential drugs and the hospital had to fund the rest.
Knowledge of mental health was increased from there being no recognition of it prior to their visit.
Next meeting on 15 July 2015
DGDavid Tolstrup and Allison along with AG Paul Mee will be visiting - bring partners if you like
On Friday evening 10 July 2015, over 120 Rotarians, families and friends attended a special screening of "Women he's undressed" at the Nova theatre in Carlton. The film was directed by Gillian Armstrong, who is an Australian Film Producer/Director and sister of our very own Ian Armstrong.
It is about an Australian Costume Designer, Orry-Kelly who won three Academy Awards for costume design. In Australia, his achievements were not recognised or celebrated for his brilliance.
The film will be publicly released shortly and if you did not get an opportunity to see it on Friday night, do yourself a favour as Molly Meldrum would say, and go and see it. It was fascinating and cleverly crafted.
For those interested in seeing the costumes - an exhibition of Orry-Kelly's work is opening on 18 August 2015 at ACMI in Federation Square. It will run til mid January 2016
For further information about the movie please click on the link below
Our thanks go to Len Brear and Ian Armstrong for organising the event.
Finally - one could not go past the magnificence of Brunettis - located in the same arcade as the Nova theatre - Brunettis' is a very large cake shop and has an amazing and decadent array of cakes and desserts - also has an area for savory stuff - but then who wants boring savory when you can get stuck into pots of semifreddo with salted caramel, or have a massive piece of apple strudel with lots of cream, or a dome shaped dessert covered in chocolate and filled with mousse and other nice stuff!
I have just hit the half way mark of my exchange and since my last update I have continued to have the time of my life.
I have been on an amazing 3 week Europe tour which took me and the other exchange students to Hungary, Czech republic, Austria, all around Italy, Monaco, Switzerland and the beautiful cities of France. I had a wonderful time seeing icon sites and cities that I would have never dreamed to see this young.
The school year here in German has come to an end and the holidays started with a week of hot weather getting to 30 plus degrees some days (which for my part of Germany is very rare). I have moved into the home of my third host family and leave to the cost of France for two weeks.
Since my holidays started I have been busy every day, going canoeing in the cities lake, out door ice-cream movies (it’s as good as it sounds), plenty of picnics and I have even attended meetings of the local inner wheel club.
I have a lot coming up for my final 6 months in Germany including a school trip to London, and trip with my host club to Amsterdam and my district trip all around Germany. I am very excited for all my trips and can’t wait to share all my stories and pictures with you.
The picture attached it of my districts in and out bound Australian exchange students at our adventure weekend.

Hello Peter,
You had all your kids and grandkids around you!!! That sounds like a great birthday!!
I’m doing fine! I’m still working as a physiotherapist at the Rudolfinerhaus Privat hospital! But in 3 weeks I will be in maternity protection. Yes, I’m pregnant!!! Supposedly it’s going to be a girl and due date is the 28thof September. So at the moment it’s a really exciting and busy time!! We are rebuilding our sports room which is going to be a children’s room in the near future.
Erich is still working for Baxter in Vienna and he is really looking forward to be a dad!!! Right now he is repainting our cot. We got it from my uncle and I think our girl is going to be third generation sleeping in this bed. So maybe you can imagine that it needs a bit of a redesign.
So far everything is fine. Last November Erich and I did a bag-pack-trip through Vietnam and Cambodia. We flew to Hanoi and worked our way through to the south of Vietnam (Saigon and Mekong-Delta) before we crossed the border to Cambodia. There we visited Phnom Penh – Battambang – Siem Reap (where we spend a whole day at Angkor Wat) before we crossed the border again to Thailand (Bangkok). There we relaxed for two more days before we had to fly back to Vienna. It was great and we had a fantastic time. This was probably our last trip alone for a long time. (You find attached some photos.)
In October a school friend of mine from Tintern is doing a trip through Europe and will spend some time in Vienna. I’m really looking forward to see her again after 10years!!! I think that it’s great that I’m still in contact with you and some other Australien-friends! So thank you and the Rotary Club of Nunawading one more time for taking me as an exchange-student!!!
Kind regards to you, your whole family and the Rotary Club of Nunawadig!
On a caravaning journey that started on 28 May and will finish mid to late September. Going up the East coast and to outback Queensland. Here are a couple of happy holiday snaps
Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith. Sandra and the RC Monash think our club is wonderful for saving all the soaps!!
Also save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight!
Foreign coins are being collected in a container at the desk. Ron Brooks RC Forest Hill has collected many kgs!
Don't forget to support Rotary Foundation, Australian Rotary Health, Paraplegic Benefit Fund - see your dues invoice
Who became a first time Great Aunt last week - baby boy named Stanley - congrats Judith!
Brian Dunkleys in-laws celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary over the weekend
After a particularly poor game of golf, a popular club member skipped the clubhouse and started to go home. As he was walking to the parking lot to get his car, a policeman stopped him and asked, "Did you tee off on the sixteenth hole about twenty minutes ago?" "Yes," the golfer responded. "Did you happen to hook your ball so that it went over the trees and off the course?" the cop asked. "Yes, I did. How did you know?" the golfer asked. "Well," said the policeman very seriously, "Your ball flew out onto the highway and crashed through a driver's windshield. The car went out of control, crashing into five other cars and a fire truck. The fire truck couldn't make it to the fire, and the building burned down. So, what are you going to do about it?" The golfer thought it over carefully and responded, "I think I'll close my stance a little bit, tighten my grip and lower my right thumb."
