Wear your footy colours for Stuart & Bob's Footy Show on Wednesday night and bring a pen/pencil.
A fun night with some footy nostalgia and many laughs
Vice-President`s Message
WOW, how much has Ethan been able to pack into his first year at Oxford! It was lovely to hear how much he has achieved academically, his sporting prowess and also had has lots of fun with friends while he has been in Oxford. You hear of some students who go overseas to study, and they enjoy the lifestyle so much that their studies suffer. Ethan proved that if you put your mind to it, work hard, keep focused on your goals, you can "have your cake and eat it".
This week is the week for our footy lovers, of which there are many. Stuart and Bob W will be running the "The Footy Show", so wear your footy colours and get ready for a night of laughs.
After the meeting we will be having our board meeting, as President Mike will be back for it. Board members please send board reports to all members so they can be read beforehand.
Finally - on a side note, Duncan and I were tourists in Melbourne on Saturday as we joined RC Healesville for a tour of the State Library. It's an amazing building. We realised we had last been in it when it was a museum as we remember seeing Phar Lap. We had lunch at Young and Jackson, and I saw Chloe, something I had not done before, and went to the 6th floor of the Nicholson Building to see the view down Swanton Street to the Shrine. That's another building I had never been in. Working in the city, you tend to rush past all these gems and don't appreciate what our fine city has to offer.
Bob & Judy Laslett, Glenys and Ethan with his parents
Last week, we were delighted to welcome our Rotary Scholar, Ethan Newnham, who shared the exciting news of his successful completion of a Master of Science (MSc) degree at Oxford University. He was joined by his proud parents, Jane and Glenn. Ethan first connected with the Rotary Club of Forest Hill after earning his Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the University of Melbourne. At the time, he was conducting research at the Howard Florey Institute and volunteering at both the Umbrella Dementia Café and the University of the Third Age (U3A). Although he had secured a place at Oxford to pursue his MSc, he lacked the necessary funding. Thanks to Bob Laslett’s efforts in rallying support from clubs across the District and securing a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, Ethan was able to embark on his academic journey. Ethan enthusiastically reported that he was Dux of his class and has now received a fully funded offer to continue at Oxford for a D.Phil. (PhD) over the next three years. In addition to his academic achievements, he represented Oxford in trampolining and enjoyed a vibrant social life with classmates and fellow Rotary Scholars. We are incredibly proud of Ethan and confident he will continue to excel in all his future endeavours. The Club looks forward to following his journey with great interest.
