HUMANITARIAN GRANT OPTIONS

As mentioned in a different week there are grants for many things including humanitarian projects such as:
(1) District Grants to help Rotary Districts support short-term or long term humanitarian projects (they also support nonhumanitarian projects like scholarships, exchange teams and more)
(2) Global Grants to support international service projects involving Rotary Clubs or Districts in two or more countries;
which fund long-term, sustainable, measurable grassroots development projects in one of The Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus.

YOU CAN BE A PART OF ACCESSING THESE GRANTS FOR WORTHY PROJECTS!

President Phil's Message

Plagiarism can be the greatest compliment

One of my great enjoyments in life is the satirical verse of Ogden Nash. This American poet joined the New Yorker in 1931 and penned some of the most delightful verse on life, love and his three daughters. I came across his verse when I was reading nursery rhymes to our girls and I now own 26 books of his work in various publications and editions. “The Termite”, is still quoted by our 30 year old daughter;

When Sue and I were on the Rocky Mountaineer, they had a contest to see who could come up with a verse that told the life cycle of salmon, from smolt to breeding adults. My contribution, based on the Ogden Nash poem “The Duck”, won the day.
Behold the smolt. It does not molt.
A molt it lacks. It swims back.
From oceans beyond through torrents to a pond.
Where it breeds at once, and then becomes lunch.

I have never written poetry and have never aspired to do so.  But I was able to adapt published verse to meet my needs.
In Rotary there are many examples of good ideas, processes or projects that other clubs have perfected.  Our Foundation Chair, Sue Cross, has taken an idea from Boronia Rotary club to increase our Centurion membership from 15 to 31 members this year. Instead of taking up a general collection Sue has set up a sheet to record the dollars given by each member. At years end a donation of $100 immediately gives the donor a Centurion membership.

Rotary is full of good ideas and the Rotarians responsible for these ideas would be delighted to get a call or an email to be asked for their advice. This is how we become a stronger organization. There is no greater compliment than having your ideas used for the good of others.

Melbourne Cup Celebrations
Over 40 Rotarians, partners and guests enjoyed complimentary sparkling wine, great food, laughter and fun at our annual celebrations. Congratulations to Harvey and his team as well as Ivan for a wonderful night. Many attendees were immersed in the Cup Fever with their choice of outfits.

Russell and Sue came up with a innovative racing simulation game and we have two very funny races. Harvey found a YouTube clip of the Parenting the Teenagers Maiden Handicap which you can enjoy here: https://youtu.be/przuq9TDUFE

Finally, there were two sweeps run and we will all know the winners tonight.

Special Olympics Walkathon Thank You
The following is thanks received from the Special Olympics for participation in their event.
A special thanks to Gabby, Bob, Judith, Ben, Susan and John on behalf of the Cub.

Yours in Rotary

Ian
Hi Ian,

I’ve spoken with the guys I seconded to run the day Kevin, Alan & Tim – all went well & your members greatly assisted in the smooth running of the event.
Please pass on my & the Melbourne Inner East (MIE) Club committee special thanks to your members who attended. Your assistance was very much appreciated. It meant our families were able to come along and enjoy the activity without having to worry about the administration side – allowing it to be a fun stress-free event. If your members have any thoughts on how we might improve the event, I’d be pleased to have their feedback.

Also, we have an athlete leadership group who have prepared PowerPoints to tell their Special Olympics story & how they benefit from being members – if you’d like a speaker at one of your meetings, I’d be pleased to bring an athlete along.

We raised approx.. $4,000 from the event. This will provide some assistance for our many MIE athlete families to enable their athlete to represent Victoria at the Special Olympics National Games in Adelaide, April next year.

Kind regards

Changemakers in Rotary Event

We are keen to invite Rotary program alumni and other young people to this event on the 13th November and seek your assistance in forwarding it on to alumni or other younger community-minded people who you know who may be interested in a new style Rotary.

Whitehorse Art Show
We are invited to the Gala Cocktail Party Launch of the Whitehorse Art Show (formerly known as The Box Hill Art Show). This event replaces the dinner they had for many years and is an innovation of the new Director Geoff Iles .

They would really appreciate us supporting this event – and the Art Show, of course. The cost of  attending the cocktail party is only $30 and as well as entertainment on the night and the grand opening by Frederick Cubbins’s granddaughter Penny McColm, there is the Awards ceremony. Quality finger food and drinks will be served.

Bookings can be made online at www.whitehorseartshow.com.au and follow the links.
