How exciting!
The decision to cancel the last meeting at Bucatini was on the recommendation of our very own Bob Davis who’s advice I did not question, and, an act that I feel vindicates the decision with the number of recorded Covid-19 cases on Thursday being 288.
With the world under the grips of this pandemic and the resultant economic and mental stresses on everyone now is the time that the good work that Rotary does continues to help those who need it.
Normally at the start of a new president’s year there would be an exciting menu of activities, events and programs laid out and planned in advance with predicted expectations. This is not the case for 2020-21
With constantly moving goalposts and unknown outcomes the future will be a difficult one to budget or predict however this club has the resources to overcome and accept new challenges with the same vigour that we have done in the past.
The real needs are either not yet known, or not yet apparent but as Rotary Opens Opportunities are we ready to take advantage of them?
I think the answer is yes.

REPORTS
PROGRAM
Covid- Restrictions
The reason we went back to remote meetings was because of the escalating cases of Covid- 19 cases in Victoria. This lead to shutdown of State Borders on Monday and the subsequent lockdown of Melbourne. on Wednesday night. While this is frustrating to us all and might not have been popular decision with some members I thought it was in the best interests of a club with our age demographic that we take this precaution.
Next Weeks' Meeting
This will be a presentation from Glen Hodgkin the new Executive Director of Nadrasca.
Speaker for 22nd's Meeting
will be "Poets Corner" led by our resident poet Bruce Atkinson. Bruce has just published his second book of poetry which includes the "Sex Life of an Avocado" and will lead off with some of his original works. All members are invited to submit either their own compositions , a favourite poem or piece of prose to me for the night.I will ask as many people as I can who submit a piece to present it on the night. We will publish all of them in the next news letter. There will be a bottle of red or box of chocolates for the best presentation as adjudged by Bruce. Have fun and keep it respectable!! Bob Davis
BY-LAWS
Ihave, with the help of a small committee, nearly finalised the updated by-laws and hope to bring them to the board next week for endorsement and progression to a virtual Special General Meeting for the club to approve them (in a similar process to that used to approve the new constitution).
Separately the committee has been working on by-laws for NewGen and I plan to talk them through with them at their meeting on Sunday.
Cheers
Rob Jackson
PLAYGROUNDS
Plans done for 2 playgrounds to date. None on books for Nunawading at moment.
We felt we might need interim storage for our playgrounds waiting for DIK to unlock. Probably not an issue at moment. Given other Councils have found storage room for a few playgrounds recently we could probably do the same with Whitehorse if need arises.
I have priced container hire for interim storage at $110 per month plus $270 delivery fee. Same fee for return. Have asked for discount for charity - no reply as yet.
Need to ask Ben to follow up with Carolynne MacNaughtan. I have emailed her at Whitehorse but have received no reply.

Janette Etherington,
MEDICAL IMAGING MACHINES
I have been offered a couple of identical pre- loved Cath Labs, due to be removed within the next few months. This is the ideal scenario for donating to a developing countries, because it provides us with one working machine with a complete set of spare parts from the other, enabling us to ensure years of maintenance and therefore, operation. The cath labs are currently in operation in Lismore and Dandenong hospitals.
A potential recipient for this cath lab is the newly built Songinokhairkhan district Hospital in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The Cath lab for CWM hospital in Suva, Fiji is waiting for travel restrictions to be lifted before we can ship it to Fiji. CWM would like the machine installed and operation before the end of the year.
Cheers

FARESHARE
FareShare are operating with unemployed chefs paid for by the Government, as I understand it with volunteers in the kitchen ‘rested’ out of concern for distancing and age related concerns.
Currently they are producing 500,000 meals a month with shifts from early morning to late evening. What they can’t access for free they buy with donations. They have huge overheads.
The Deakin Community Awardsis an initiative that recognises our unsung local community leaders and volunteers who generously give their time and energy to make our community a better place to live........ Nominations Close Friday 7 August 2020.
