03 August 2025

There's a feeling of enthusiasm in the club at the moment, at least from my perspective. We've got some new projects in development, some new technology to experiment with which should help us keep ourselves organised and we're getting better at sharing our club's story with the wider community.

What have we been up to?

  • A fantastic radio interview on 4WBC which focused on Ryda and the Rotary volunteer support that makes delivering those youth driver education days possible. Thanks to Bob W, Ken, Glenys and everybody who has helped with a Ryda event.
  • Securing our spot at the Whitehorse Spring Festival for this year. Stay tuned for requests for volunteers for our activity and information station.
  • Another fantastic Bunnings sausage sizzle. A cold cloudy morning? Sure, but it all burned off by noon, leaving a beautiful blue sky just perfect for selling snags. Russell can be assured the show will go on.

What's coming up?

  • This Wednesday we'll hear from Pat Wilson about the Community Employment Partnership and what we can do to continue to support this great project.
  • Tuesday week -- 12 August -- we have the club lunch at the coach. Details and registration here or you can probably get Harvey on the phone and let him know you want to be there.
  • Book in for the social and cultural activity evening on 27 August in place of our usual weekly meeting. Tickets have been purchased by the club and now we need members to reserve and pay for their seat at Grandparent's Club 2 at The Round. Tickets are $70 each and money can be deposited into the club's special account -- not the fundraising one -- with your name and "GC2 Ticket' in the description so we know what and who it's for.
  • Blackburn Lake Sanctuary working bees on 30 August and 20 September. Both are Saturday mornings starting at 9:30 am and you can get in touch with Peter K for more info.

I haven't had time to find a young person to help me take a better photo yet, so enjoy the cartoon avatar I created several years ago when there was more red in my facial hair.

See you Wednesday.

Eastern Emergency Relief Network

Past President Gabby is also the Secretary of Eastern Emergency Relief Network (EERN). She presented the history of EERN which was founded in 1995. EERN procures and supplies its member welfare agencies and their clients with furniture, whitegoods, bedding, nonperishable food free of charge. Most clients are from Family and Domestic Violence situations, refugees, homelessness due to illness and/or financially destitute.

After the presentation, Glenys took a photo of Gabby with Ian A, a former President of EERN.

RYDA

Ryda is a youth program of Road Safety Education Limited (RSE).  RSE is a not for profit and leading learning organisation operating throughout Australia and New Zealand, committed to creating communities free from road deaths and injury (our vision) through the provision of engaging, interactive and personalised learning for youth (our mission).

Ryda is a whole school approach partnership with Rotary which supports teachers on the journey as they provide their students with the tools and understanding they need to see themselves as active, responsible road citizens.  Ryda features a highly engaging and memorable one-day workshop which front-loads students’ understanding of road safety and gives them the tools, habits and motivation to take action and stay safe on our roads as both drivers and passengers throughout their lives.

Watch this short video from RSE for a summary of Ryda's statistics over the past 12 months.

RORP Update

This week we had the pleasure of harvesting another playground. This one from the Halidon Close Playground in St Helena, courtesy of the Banyule Council.

Thanks to Ian Armstrong, Peter Koens, Graeme Moorfoot Bob Davis and Harvey Lane. And a special thank you to the contractor (Safe Play) for their help and to Phil and Steve for bring the EERN truck and helping load, transport and unload the playground at Kilsyth South.

I am currently working to arrange a shipment of playgrounds to an overseas location, Watch this space for details.

Belonging Matters

We have developed a newsletter that we hope will come out every couple of months to highlight the work of all the Rotary clubs we have partnered with.
I am hoping you can send it out to members or put it in your new (and fabulous) bulletin.

Kind regards

Patricia Wilson (she/her)
Community Employment Partnerships Manager
