Tonight's speaker was Kate De Josselin who gave a very personal insight into the Prader Willi Syndrome
her son was born with Prader Willi - the syndrome occurs due to a deletion on Chromosome 15
he needs constant monitoring due to having an insatiable appetite - she keeps no food at home and shops daily
Prader Willi is the most common genetic cause of obesity. Her son has kept his weight constant over the past 8 years due to strict control over his food intake.
Prader Willi sufferers have a median IQ of 65 and emotional intelligence of a 9 to 10 year old.
Have a very high pain threshold
They have no REM sleep so sleep is very broken
They have no growth hormone or testosterone
the syndrome affects every function and so her son has 9 specialists to manage his health and behaviour.
More information can be found on the link below to Wikipedia or google Prader Willi
Mini Me! Did it, he successfully organised the last luncheon!!!!
From all reports the COCC received, Mini COCC did an excellent job. We have had the coccette and now mini COCC successfully organising very festive occasions, by bringing CC members together, for tastes to delight.
Well, not to be outdone, or realising the masses may revolt, the COCC is back. Lunch is ON. Escape the gloom of winter, the dullness of your lounge rooms and join others at the COACH and HORSES in Ringwood. (no I do not have shares in the Pub), but the fair is reasonable, the costs are minimal, especially if you pair up with another member. The company should be good with much chatter about everything, (not including Rotary, politics or religion).
Date: Tuesday 21st June 2016 (thanks RT for reminding the Chair)
Janne and I will be there around 12.30, so if you feel inclined we will see you there!!!!
On Sunday Ian Armstrong, Russell and myself attended a lunch to farewell Ian and Juliet Riseley as they head off for the US for the next 2 years.
300 or so well wishers attended this lunch and heard Ian speak briefly of what his next 2 years might involve and what changes he might make in his Presidential year.

The visit has been arranged for 27 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.
The Institute has advised as follows:-
“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”
The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS
More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins that end up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.
Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates this successful D9810 project. He says “have a coffee jar at your registration desk each week to collect them”. DG David said “This is a great initiative, involving little effort that could become a great source of publicity. Ron will coordinate at District level but needs help from all clubs” In the last 18 months 120kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at $4,700.64
Eammon Bryant, UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed “We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match. Our history working with, and converting foreign coin to help children in need matched with your unparalleled reach across Australian communities, we think, makes it a dream fit”. UNICEF works in over 190 countries to support children’s health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.
So, far more than 15 clubs in the district have joined enthusiastically into this initiative. We are 12.1kgs into the next collection.
=
• $2 will provide a severely malnourished child enough therapeutic super food for one day
• $6 will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine
UNICEF will also take old European coins that are no longer in circulation.
Please leave your foreign coins and notes in the jar on the desk
A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis he said,
'If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river.'
With even greater emphasis he said, 'And if I had
All the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river.'
And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he
Said, 'And if I had all the whiskey in the world,
I'd take it and pour it into the river.'
Sermon complete, he sat down...
The song leader stood very cautiously and announced
With a smile, nearly laughing, 'For our closing song,
Let us sing Hymn #365, 'Shall We Gather at the River.'
Smile - life is too short not to!!
If this brightened your day
Don't let it stop here
Pass it on with a smile
Keep spreading the Cheer.
Sometimes I have to stand on my head to see things as they are, when the world seems so upside-down that this is the only position in which anything makes sense.
