Hallo,

Sorry for this being a little late but I was not with my computer for a while as I celebrated Karnival with the other inbound exchange students from my district. We all went and stayed in Dusseldorf and spent the days in costume watching the parade and the nights together dancing to many different cultured music (the Brazil exchange students never stop dancing).

On my report you will see a N/A for my councillor, I am in constant contact with my YEO and he covers most of the responsibilities, as for my councillor I have heard it will be a female nurse who is the wife of a Rotarian but I am yet to get details (other than her name Ana) or met her.

You will also see that I have been sick, my host sisters and I have caught a bug going around but we are getting better.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity, I absolutely love being here in Germany

Kind Regards

Gracie Reiter

Carina will be participating in the "Ride for Research" an Australian Rotary Health fundraising event that starts straight after the Ballarat Conference. She is looking for sponsorship.

The ride goes from Ballarat to Ballarat via Colac, Great Ocean Road, Port Fairy Fairy and Horsham. The riders will ride between 75kms and 125kms a day depending on their group.

I can tell you from personal experience that it is not easy to get on your bike and ride in all sorts of weather up and down hills for 6 days. By day 3 or 4 the bum really starts to hurt and the legs get tired.

Please let me know if you wish to contribute. I will co-ordinate the collection of payments and the issuance of receipts.

For those who are not familiar with the great works of Australian Rotary Health, I suggest you visit this website: http://www.australianrotaryhealth.org.au/

Thanks in anticipation

Graeme Moorfoot

A lovely film which begins where the first film leaves off. Well worth going to see.
The Rotary Club of Croydon made $1500 for polio plus which grows to $3000 with a matching grant!
The little Croydon theatre was a sell out.

Introducing a guest speaker
  1. Know the speaker's name and how to pronounce it.
  2. Know the speaker's title or position. Do not turn and ask the speaker "Is it Associate or Assistant Professor?"
  3. Be brief. Aim for between 45 seconds and two minutes. Five minutes is too long.
  4. Smile and be enthusiastic in tone, gesture and choice of words.
  5. Know enough about the subject to sound knowledgeable. Do not turn to the speaker and ask if the topic is epidemiology, epistemology or episiotomy.
  6. Announce the speech title as given to you by the speaker. If you have any questions about it, ask the speaker before the introduction. Many speakers select specific titles for a reason or for a pun. If the speaker is not using a title, make sure that your description matches the speaker’s.
  7. Introductions are no place to use slides, overheads or presentation software.
  8. < > are good but should pertain to the subject and be in harmony with the mood of the presentation. Avoid using canned jokes.
If the credentials of the speaker are so outstanding that they must be shared with the audience or if there are publications the audience will want to know about, insert them in the program or prepare a separate commemorative handout.
  9. Never use the old cliché that the speaker needs no introduction. If the introduction ties the speaker to the audience and the topic then each introduction is unique, plus there is always something new about every speaker. There may be audience members who don’t know the guest.
  10. You are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject. Do not dwell on your relationship with the speaker, even though he or she is your boss, relative or significant other.

    Thanking a guest speaker
  11. Be brief.  Do not repeat the speech.
  12. Again, you are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject.
  13. If there is a presentation do not say this is a ‘small token of our appreciation’.
Rather ‘We would like you to accept this gift in appreciation of your time spent with us this evening.’
  14. Ask the audience to thank the speaker with acclamation.

Somebody?s been talking !
My wife hosted a dinner party for all our friends, some of whom we hadn't seen for ages. Everyone was encouraged to bring their children.
All through the meal my wife's best friend's four year old daughter stared at me as I sat opposite her. The girl could hardly eat her food; just kept staring
I checked my shirt for spots, felt my face for food and patted my hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at me. I tried my best to ignore her,
but finally it was too much for me.
I asked her, "Why are you staring at me?" Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior and the table went quiet for her response.
The little girl said, "I'm just waiting to see how you drink like a fish?"
