Why Did You Join Rotary?

People join Rotary for many reasons - a desire to give back to their community; a wish to help those in need overseas; wanting to meet new, like-minded people; a desire to be a part of something bigger.

Rotary is definitely "something bigger". We are a club of 44 - one of the largest clubs in District 9810. In turn we are 44 of the 29,326 Rotarians in Australia and 1 of the 1107 clubs in Australia, which belong to 21 districts. There is a staggering 1,236,498 Rotarians around the world, belonging to 35,835 clubs, across 545 districts, in 220 countries. These are not just statistics - they are awesome and awe-inspiring numbers!

We are not just a part, but an integral part, of  a service organisation which has no political or religious affiliations, and which welcomes members regardless of race or gender.

Together we can achieve so much more than we could ever achieve individually - this is why I joined Rotary.

National Tree Day
Members will recall we assisted the City of Whitehorse with their tree planting last year for National Tree Day.
Well it's on again on Sunday 29th July from 10am til 12noon. Then a Bbq will be provided for participants. That's right - a Bbq where we don't have to cook!!
It's at Tassells Park, 123 Woodhouse Grove Box Hill North this time.
Just dress for the weather and bring a tool or two.
All those interested please contact Ian Armstrong before Wednesday 25th so that he can register us with the organisers.
This low cost, high visibility opportunity for hands on service was well received last year so let's do it again.
Guest Speaker - Red Cross Emergency Management
The guest speaker at the 18 July meeting was Kate Siebert, the State Manager for the Red Cross Emergency Service in Victoria.

Kate spoke of her experience as part of the Rotary International Group Study Exchange (GSE) that connects young professionals with industry leaders across the globe through an immersive travel experience. As a delegate, she studied emergency management practice in Texas, leveraging the support of the global Rotary network and experience.

Kate provided an insight into the Red Cross emergency services support services in their preparation for potential emergency situations such as bushfires and the Bourke Street massacre. In this she highlighted the potential synergies between organisations such as Red Cross and Rotary in responding to emergencies as they develop.
What is The Rotary Foundation?
The Rotary Foundation is the economic engine for Rotary International. It is a non-profit corporation that is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of Rotary who share its vision of a better world. Its sole mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, good will and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. We accomplish that through our local and international humanitarian and educational programs.

The founder of The Rotary Foundation, Arch C. Klumph
A member of the Rotary Club of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Arch C. Klumph served as the RI president in the 1913-14 Rotary year. In 1917, Klumph declared that “we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service.” His vision and a contribution of US$26.50 left over from the RI Convention helped to establish the charitable and humanitarian arm of our organization, The Rotary Foundation.
Due to the hard work and generosity of Rotarians worldwide, The Rotary Foundation has improved lives for nearly 100 years. With ongoing financial support, our Foundation will continue to carry on Klumph’s dream well into our second century of service
