Further details to follow.

In 1865 August Schwerkolt built a cottage for his family from stone taken from the Mullum Mullum Creek about 2 kilometres upstream from what is now Yarran Dheran. A bullock track was cut along the banks of the creek for carting stone which extended as far as the crown land which was set aside for a stone quarry which occupied a large part of the park. In later years, a private contractor and the Nunawading Council worked the quarry until 1963 when the Council operated a tip in the old quarry. The 1962 Melbourne bushfires destroyed part of the natural vegetation and also a pine plantation planted in the 1930s by Mitcham Primary School. In 1967 it was declared that the crown land would be the site for a public park.

Following presentations from the local residents and the Blackburn Tree Preservation Society, the site was chosen for a native plant park and the name Yarran Dheran, roughly meaning Wattle Gully, was chosen. In April 1971 a committee of management was established and over 40,000 trees and shrubs were planted over the following 10 years. In 1973 a landscape designer was appointed to prepare a master plan and two hectares of additional land was purchased, increasing the size of the park to 7.2 hectares. In 1975 major earthworks began, a waterfall and fern gully were completed in 1979 and the information centre in 1980.

The Rotary Foundation has continued its steady growth, moving up 35 spots to 85th in The Chronicle of Philanthropy's of the top 400 nonprofit organizations in the United States. The ranking is based on monetary contributions from private sources and reflects the increasing generosity of those who support Rotary's mission.

According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Rotary Foundation received $239,576,000 in 2013, a 32.4 percent increase from the previous year.

"This clearly shows our members recognize the unparalleled value of giving to their Foundation," says John Hewko, Rotary's general secretary. "They know that by giving to the Foundation their dollars have a much greater impact. And friends of Rotary respect that the Foundation puts their gift to great use."

The Foundation recently earned a from , the largest and most prestigious independent evaluator of nonprofits in the United States. In the 2013-14 Rotary year, 92 percent of the Foundation's expenditures were applied to programs, with only 6 percent spent on fundraising and 2 percent on administrative expenses. The Foundation funded $23.5 million in district grants and $47.3 million in global grants. These grants support local and international humanitarian projects as well as scholarships.

Together with its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has led the effort to eradicate polio, contributing more than $1.3 billion to the initiative since its outset. When an outbreak of polio threatened the Horn of Africa and the Middle East in 2013, Rotary provided emergency funds, including a $500,000 rapid-response grant for Somalia and a $500,000 grant to the World Health Organization (WHO) to cover operational costs in the Middle East. As a result, the outbreak in the Horn of Africa slowed, and Syria reported only one case of polio in the first half of 2014.

Rotary is also at the forefront of efforts to fight other diseases. According to WHO, indoor air pollution causes 4.3 million deaths per year worldwide. To combat it, members of the Rotary Club of Taos-Milagro, New Mexico, USA, mobilized Rotary clubs in several countries to support the Himalayan Stove Project, which has installed more than 3,000 clean-burning stoves in Nepal.

In Tamil Nadu, India, Rotary clubs partnered with clubs in Maryland, USA, to use a Foundation global grant to purchase a large van and outfit it with X-ray equipment to screen women for breast cancer in hard-to-reach communities. The "mammobus" has conducted more than 2,500 free breast cancer screenings and detected and treated early-stage cancer in six women. Rotary members in Malindi, Kenya, teamed up with members in Maryland and Idaho, USA, to work with the Genesis World Mission in creating a rainwater catchment system to provide clean drinking water, irrigate crops, and establish fish farms in Burangi, Kenya.

In Seattle, Washington, USA, Rotary members are diverting millions of pounds of fruit and vegetables from the waste stream and into the hands of those who need it through Rotary First Harvest, a program of District 5030.

Our Last Christmas Function at this venue!
The Eastern Golf Club’s history dates back to 1896 and to 1944 at our current home of Doncaster. Over the 110 years of rich history the Club has endured some of the most significant historical events in Australian pop culture including housing the first Melbourne Cup winner, Archer.
Now, the Club is still rich and proud of history and embarking on one of the biggest private golf club relocation projects to Yering in the Yarra Valley. The Club remains strong and passionate towards it’s long history and pledges to hold on to the traditions of the Club at their new home in Yering. The relocation will be complete mid 2015.

January – is Friends month at FareShare

As January is a traditionally quiet month here, we have decided to introduce a Bring a Friend/s month . No need for them to attend an information session or provide any financial contribution (unless they want to of course). Our priority is to keep our kitchens full of volunteers to maximise production during that traditionally quiet month of January. So if you would like to bring along your partner, teenage daughter or son (16 and over), parent or sibling or friend/s to your shift, then you are most welcome to.

Alternatively we have lots of spare shifts for groups of volunteers as corporates don’t book in in January and schools haven’t started back.

Hey, here’s a novel gift idea - how about giving your friends or family a voucher for a FareShare kitchen experience (we can provide you with the voucher) and a FareShare apron ($25) for Christmas? We can accommodate groups of 4, 8, 12 or 16 volunteers here – so please see Dianna or me to book a shift here for your volunteering crew. We promise to make it a truly special experience!
